Small town feel in southwest Connecticut
Derby is a small town in southwest Connecticut that offers its roughly 12,000 residents affordable homes, access to beautiful parks, and a traditional suburban lifestyle with a small-town feel. “Derby is really nice,” says Nickie O'Toole, a Realtor with O'Toole Realty LLC who lives in nearby Seymour and has been selling real estate for over 20 years. “The neighborhoods are nice, and people go out a lot after dinner and walk. The state park is really beautiful, too."
Cape Cods, Colonials and raised ranch-style houses
Newcomers to Deby will find quiet, wide residential streets lined with various home styles like Cape Cods, Colonials and raised ranch-style houses. While some homes were built as long ago as 1900, most are from the 1950s and 1960s. They sit close together on verdant, landscaped lawns and many feature garages. While sidewalks are scarce, the streets offer space for residents to take afternoon walks and kids to ride their bikes. Prices range from 190,000 for 900 square feet to $595,000 for 2,600 square feet. Those looking to add personal touches to a home can find fixer-uppers averaging about 150,000 for 1,300 square feet. Condos are also available, ranging from $92,000 for 700 square feet to $300,000 for 1,500 square feet.

Osbornedale State Park is a big draw
One of Derby’s biggest draws is Osbornedale State Park, a sprawling 417-acre recreation area off the east bank of the Housatonic River. Residents hike the numerous trails that wind throughout the park and fish in the multiple ponds during the summer. The park is also popular when it snows, according to O’Toole. "They have great hills to sled down in the winter,” she says. Osbornedale State Park also contains the Kellog Environmental Center, which offers workshops, nature activities, and lectures, and The Osborne Homestead Museum, a colonial revival-style homestead that was the home of Frances Osborne Kellog, an influential 20th-century Derby resident.
Dew Drop Inn is a local favorite
Pershing Drive bisects the town and leads to a large shopping center with national retailers that help residents cross everything off their weekly to-do lists, including three grocery stores: Aldi Stop & Shop and ShopRite. They also stock up on bulk buys at BJ’s and find bargains at Family Dollar. They can choose from several popular chain restaurants while there, like Panera Bread and McDonald’s, or they head south towards Roosevelt Drive and belly up to the bar at the Dew Drop Inn, a local favorite for its extensive beer selection and pub grub. Another local staple is Roseland Apizza, which has been serving New Haven-style pizza, lobster ravioli, and other Italian favorites since 1935.

Route 8 leads to Waterbury and I-84
Route 8 runs through the city's center, and residents take it to get to Waterbury and Interstate 84, about 18 miles north. New Haven is about 10 miles east along Derby Avenue, and Hartford is about 45 miles northeast. Those who want to reduce their time in the car can pick up the Amtrak train in New Haven and take it to New York, Boston, or just about anywhere else in the northeast United States they want to go.
