Just over a mile from the Detroit River, the Riverbend neighborhood is a revitalizing area with just over 1000 homes. The established community is more sparsely populated than some surrounding neighborhoods, and plenty of lots are for sale. To bring people back to Riverbend, an urban orchard of apple trees was planted by Wolverine Human Services, an organization dedicated to helping children and families by providing services to the entire community. There’s a popular local farmers market on East Warren Avenue and a small playground on Goethe Street. Close to the US/Canadian border, the area is only 7 miles from the fun of downtown.

The neighborhood has a nice mix of apartments, townhouses, duplexes and single-family homes. There are historic structures dotted about and newer Victorian-inspired constructions on Marlborough Street. Houses are set back from the sidewalks to allow for modest front lawns, and mature trees are scattered throughout the brick bungalows and colonials. Prices range from $45,000 for a four-bedroom historic bungalow needing renovation to $200,000 for a three-bedroom rehabilitated colonial. Getting around the Riverbend neighborhood can take many forms. There are bus stops throughout the area to take residents the 7 miles downtown or to other parts of the city. Bounded by Mack and Jefferson Avenues, Alter Road and Conner Street, the area is close to Interstate 94 and the Detroit River. Sidewalks of varying conditions run through the neighborhood, so locals carefully watch their steps when strolling.
Science programs and liberal arts
Students in Riverbend are zoned to Detroit Public Schools Carstens Elementary-Middle and East English Village Preparatory Academy. The elementary/middle facility earned a C-minus from Niche, while the high school has a D-plus overall and a B-plus for its teachers. Carstens teaches a STEM curriculum and uses the area’s waterfront resources to teach children hands-on lessons. It provides art therapy and tutoring as after-school activities. The East English Village Preparatory Academy offers dual enrollment with the University of Detroit Mercy and has extracurricular programs like robotics club, academic games and career and technical education.

Unique shops, soul food and converted churches
There’s easy access to shopping and dining in Riverbend. Quick service and fast casual restaurants rest close to the freeway, and Yellow Light is a local favorite for house-roasted coffee and handmade donuts. Mack-Alter Square contains an Aldi and Family Dollar, while nearby Atwater Brewery continues Michigan’s tradition of great beer-making with Atwater at the Park, a traditional German beer hall in a former church. Detroit Soul is known for large portions and down-home cuisine. Its food takes inspiration from Indigenous, African, and Caribbean cooking traditions, and everything is made from scratch with locally sourced ingredients. POST was opened in 2017 by Mutal Adoration, a business specializing in crafts and community building. The mixed-use space has rentable studios and a retail shop and is home to local companies producing work in the building’s studios. It hosts workshops and private crafting parties and teaches screen printing, ceramic glazing and enameled jewelry making.

From pocket park to expansive green spaces
Riverbend has a pocket park covering 2.6 acres on Goethe Street. The Algonquin-Goethe Park contains an open area that doubles as a soccer field, a basketball court and a playground. There’s also a walking path around the perimeter. Nearby, Chandler Park is one of only four regional parks in Detroit covering more than 200 acres. It has a municipal golf course, a large family aquatic center and an athletic field for football, soccer or lacrosse. Cared for by the Chandler Park Conservancy, the green space is home to marshland, gardens and a skate park. There’s also a fitness zone and tennis courts for those hoping to break a sweat.
