Fast-growing suburb on the Durham-Wake County line
At the eastern edge of Durham County, Eastern Durham sits in a convenient, yet scenic location. “It’s been very rural up until recently, but there’s a lot of building going on over here now,” says Realtor Sheryl Merritt of New Legacy Realty. “This part of town has been one of Durham County’s best-kept secrets until now,” she says, attributing the new uptick in popularity to two primary factors. “It’s the new construction and it’s the fact that you’re still in the county, so you may have lower taxes, which helps to alleviate some of the burden when it comes to the cost of homeownership.” Beyond the potential for lower taxes, Eastern Durham offers easy commuting to three major employment hubs: Durham proper, Raleigh and the Research Triangle Park. All three destinations are less than 20 miles from most homes.
Eastern Durham was once a rural community but it's changing everyday.

Diverse housing stock east of Durham proper
Homes on this side of Durham County come in myriad styles representing decades ranging from the mid-20th century to today, from Craftsman bungalows and modest Minimal Traditional cottages to boxy Traditional-style homes. In subdivisions such as Ganyard Farm, rows of Prairie-inspired townhomes line the winding residential streets. “It’s up-and-coming as far as builders,” says Merritt, observing that while development in some sections of Eastern Durham began decades ago, most homes available now were built within the last 15 years. “Anytime you see builders and developers moving into an area, it means it’s a great time to purchase in that area. Especially if you want a sizeable lot,” she says. Prices here depend largely on lot size, in addition to the home’s age. “A 2-acre lot without a house on it is going to be around $400,000. With a house, it’s going to be closer to $700,000 or $720,000. And some of the new construction homes are going to go for between $450,000 and $500,000 because the lots are a lot smaller,” Merrit says. Broadly, homes in Eastern Durham run anywhere from $325,000 to nearly $750,000.
Standard homes in Eastern Durham start at close to 330,000, climbing as high as 625,000.

Between Durham and Raleigh
Wake Forest Highway runs east-west through the middle of Eastern Durham. US Route 70 bustles by the southwest edge, connecting northwest toward Durham and southeast toward Raleigh. Downtown Durham is within 8 miles of most homes, a drive that can take as little as 15 minutes, depending on traffic. At about 20 miles away, the drive to Raleigh takes about twice as long. Research Triangle Park, a major employment hub for the region, is just 7 miles south of most homes. That’s about a 15-minute commute by car with no traffic. For those looking to fly farther afield, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport is just south of Interstate 540, about 9 miles from most homes.

Public parks and a semi-private golf club
Twin Lakes Park stretches across nearly 50 acres of the community’s northwest corner. It features a championship-sized turf soccer field, picnic areas, a basketball court and a classic playground. Visitors can also fish from the shady banks of Twin Lake Number One or Twin Lake Number Two, which flank either side of Twin Lakes Road. Off Wake Forest Highway, near the heart of Eastern Durham, The Crossings Golf Club’s 18-hole course is one of only two original Ron Garl-designed golf courses in North Carolina. Full memberships and weekday-only memberships are available at the semi-private club, which opened in 1997. The Falls Lake State Recreation Area, surrounding Falls Lake about 8 miles northeast of most homes, draws outdoor enthusiasts from around the county. The state park offers hundreds of campsites, 25 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails. Falls Lake itself also provides ample opportunity for boating, swimming and fishing for crappie, catfish and largemouth bass.

Retailers and restaurants galore south of Leesville Road
There are a few shopping and dining options scattered along Wake Forest Highway, within a few miles of most homes. The little shopping center at the corner of Sherron Road and Wake Forest Highway is anchored by a Food Lion. There’s a Shell gas station, a Family Dollar and a Goodwill nearby, too. Merritt says that for more robust retail and restaurant options, most locals head south to the shopping corridors surrounding the intersection of Interstate 540 and US Route 70. It’s mainly big-box retail and chain restaurants, from Target and Walmart Supercenter to Olive Garden and LongHorn. “Most of the restaurants I like are all the way on the other side of Durham County,” says Merritt. Kelsey Kearney, an Allen Tate Realtor and lifelong Durham local, agrees. “Downtown Durham has turned into a really bright spot in terms of restaurants,” she says. One of her favorites for fresh, made-in-house pasta is Mother & Sons Trattoria.
