The City of Eastpointe is not far from Lake St Clair, Macomb Mall and Detroit’s bustling downtown. Music fans might also know it as the hometown of Alice Cooper, and nearby 8 Mile Road was made famous by rapper and former resident Eminem. Overflowing with history, thriving businesses and plenty of shops and restaurants, Eastpointe is a more affordable location for Detroit area residents. “Eastpointe is a starter home neighborhood with two different school districts and a great community,” says Flo Abke, GRI at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services on 10 Mile Road. She has 37 years of experience selling homes in the Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties, was on the Eastpointe City Council for two terms, and has lived in the area for many years. Students attend schools within the Eastpointe Community School District and the South Lake School District, and the community is home to many couples and small families.

Bungalows between 10 Mile Road and 8 Mile Road
“Most homes are about 1,000 square feet, and there's a lot of bungalows. There are also larger ranch homes on the eastern portion of the city,” Abke says. Those brick bungalows with two to three bedrooms sit on modest lots with large trees. Many have single-car driveways and garages tucked in the back, with nice backyards and little front porches. Buyers can find a two-bedroom bungalow listed below $100,000, though most cost around $150,000. Two-story Colonial-inspired homes on the east side of town have three to four bedrooms and range between $150,000 and $250,000 dollars. While some homes are going through renovations, many may need some special attention. A few bungalows have been renovated, but many still require some special attention.

Commutes along Interstate 94 to downtown Detroit
“There are a lot of downtown amenities that Eastpointe residents can access because the freeway is so close,” Abke says. “I-94 takes you right to any Lions, Pistons or Red Wings game.” It is only a 10-mile drive to downtown, but it can often take around 30 minutes to get there. Those who work downtown should prepare for traffic during the mornings and evenings. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is one of Michigan’s most popular airports and is about 28 miles away via Interstate 94.

Macomb Mall and local restaurants on 10 Mile Road
“There are some very nice smaller restaurants and small shops in Eastpointe, but most people shop elsewhere,” says Abke. “Luckily, Macomb Mall is about 10 minutes away on Gratiot. Most people shop there for bigger purchases.” 5 Star Restaurant on 10 Mile Road serves big American breakfasts and salads or sandwiches for lunch. Coffee Break Café nearby has strong espresso, tasty pastries and a warm interior with cozy décor and a selection of teas, coffee, honey and syrups to buy for at-home drinks. For long shopping trips, Macomb Mall has many retail shops like Foot Locker or Michaels. Nearby are the local Sam’s Club and a Home Depot, and the local Meijer has groceries, home goods and a pharmacy. Locals take to Gratiot Avenue to shop at Kroger or to eat at Andary’s Grill & Deli for breakfast or a plate of steak and potatoes.

Kennedy Park and Spindler Park playscapes and sports
“Lake St. Clair has a number of beaches nearby, and Eastpointe has use of a boat launch. There are also two big parks in Eastpointe,” Abke says. “Kennedy Park and Spindler Park are great because this really is a family-oriented community, though couples like the starter homes.” John F. Kennedy Memorial Park shares space with the Eastpointe Water Department and is considered a good spot for adults and kids to spend time. There are picnic areas for family gatherings, a baseball diamond for after-work games and even a skate park and concrete hockey rink for street or roller hockey. In the wintertime, the rink is iced over so players can skate. Eastpointe Spindler Park has a large playground next to the sand volleyball court and a pavilion for gathering or picnicking. Residents can play shuffleboard with friends on one of their six courts or get in an old-fashioned game of horseshoes. The large green field is great for soccer games, and the disc golf course has become pretty popular. Best of all, in wintertime, residents like to sled at Spindler Park’s hill.

Eastpointe Community School District programs
For kindergarten through second grade, students can attend either Crescentwood Elementary School, which is graded a B-minus on Niche, or Forest Park Elementary School, which scores a C-plus. For third through fifth grade, Bellview Elementary School is graded a C-minus, and Pleasantview Elementary School is graded a D. Kindergarten through middle school students can take advantage of the district’s partnership with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. Before and after-school programs at the YMCA let students receive homework help or participate in arts and crafts within a supervised environment. All students can then move on to Eastpointe Middle School, rated a D-plus, which hosts events for students and parents like Family Game Nights. Eastpointe High School is graded a C-minus and offers dual enrollment through Macomb Community College.

Eastpointe High School serves students 9-12 and is rated a C-minus on Niche.

Hard rock concerts and antique car shows
Although Alice Cooper’s favorite venue, the Eastown Theatre, burned down in 2010, there is still music on Harper Avenue. The Harpos Concert Theatre, south of the neighborhood, has several hard rock and heavy metal concerts, live shows and events for east Detroit residents to attend all year long. In August, the area hosts the Cruisin’ Gratiot antique automobile show on Gratiot Avenue. Visitors can line up to see classic cars, join family activities and buy from local businesses.
