Suburban living beside the Great Miami River
In the Cincinnati metro area, Bengals games are best accompanied by hot Skyline dip: a combination of cream cheese, shredded cheddar and — most essentially — Skyline Chili. The fast-casual chain, which now has around 160 locations across the Midwest and Florida, is headquartered in Fairfield, Ohio, a city that's home to approximately 45,000 people. “It’s not a very busy city,” says Faifield’s planning manager, Erin Lynn, “But we have a great park system and we have a lot of amenities.” Here, strip mall shopping centers are located down the street from neighborhood farm stands, church steeples and Little League fields. Dog walkers and kayakers frequent the protected marshlands beside the Great Miami River, and there are city-sponsored events around the holiday season: local businesses decorate their own Christmas trees, and residents come together to donate Angel Tag gifts to the Salvation Army. Fairfield is a mix of corporate headquarters, national chains and small-town charm just 25 miles from the larger city of Cincinnati.

Corporate headquarters and public transportation
Along with Skyline Chili, other major employers in Fairfield include Koch Foods and Cincinnati Financial Corporation, which has its own 35-acre campus home to more than 3,000 employees. There’s also Mercy Health - Fairfield Hospital, a 230-bed facility that specializes in fields like maternity care and women’s health. Interstates 275 and 74 lead south to Cincinnati, which is 25 miles — or about a 45 minute drive — away. Public transit is somewhat limited within Fairfield, but the R3 Oxford-Forest Park Connector, part of the Butler County Regional Transit Authority, or BCRTA, offers passage to the Forest Park - Park and Ride; from here, routes lead into Queen City and beyond. The Butler County Regional Airport, which is primarily used for flight lessons and private businesses, is directly north of Fairfield, but most residents book commercial flights out of the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport, around 40 miles away via I-275. In early 2024, the city began a project to widen roads, replace curbs and improve signage, which is set to help those who commute via car.

Housing trends and decreasing crime rates
Prospective buyers will find modest Cape Cods and ranch-style houses dating back to the years following World War II in the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Other midcentury styles here include split-level and bi-level houses, and Fairfield also has pockets of New Traditional homes that were built between the 1980s and late 1990s. According to the most recent data, median single-family home prices hover around $300,000, significantly lower than the national average of $420,000 and it’s common to find attached garages and backyards with enough space for above-ground swimming pools. Those looking to settle down in Fairfield will also be able to find townhouses for under $150,000. “We are about 87% built out,” says Lynn, so new construction is limited. The available inventory sells quickly, spending an average of 22 days on the market.
With the exception of major shopping thoroughfares like U.S. Route 127, streets in Fairfield are relatively quiet with little thru traffic. Recent years have seen decreasing crime rates in Covington and between 2015 and 2024, the total number of reported incidents dropped from 1,216 to 715. According to Police Department Data, close to 95% of all crimes within the city were non-violent.

Over two dozen public parks
There are more than two dozen parks in Fairfield ranging in size from less than an acre to upwards of 150 acres. Harbin Park is the city’s largest and includes a disc golf course, mountain biking trails and a sledding hill. The city is also home to several historic cemeteries and two golf courses: Fairfield North Trace and Fairfield South Trace, the latter of which has an onsite aquatic center. Boating and fishing are permitted at Thomas O. Marsh Park, where the Bait House sells sandwiches for afternoons spent out on the lake. There are summer camp options and wakeboarding classes at Wake Nation Water Park, and there’s a canine pond at FurField Dog Park.
Other public facilities include the Community Arts Center, which has a theater, an art gallery and dance studios. The Elisha Morgan Mansion, a local historic landmark, can be rented and is also where the historical society meets monthly.

Ten schools within the Fairfield City School District
The city of Fairfield has its own public school district, which earns an overall B grade from Niche. There are about 10,000 students and 10 schools within the district, four of which earned 'best elementary schools badges' from U.S. News & World Report for 2025. The Fairfield Branch of the Lane Libraries has monthly book clubs, yoga classes and computer labs, all open to the public.
Fairfield Senior High serves over 2,100 students in the local school district.

Annual events in Village Green Park
There are also plenty of free public events held seasonally in Fairfield, many of which are centered around the Village Green Park. The Cincy Blues Fest, for instance, has been a July tradition for the past three decades, and there’s also live music at the Village Green Car Show in September. Residents can stop by food trucks before setting up chairs for summertime Movie Nights in the Park, and there are city-sponsored parades on Memorial Day and around the Christmas season. The Fairfield Farmers Market, which is primarily outdoors, moves inside the Community Arts Center during the winter months.
Commercial activity along Route 127 and Dixie Highway
U.S. Route 127 — also known as Pleasant Avenue — and the Dixie Highway serve as the city’s main commercial corridors. Shopping plazas feature big-box retailers, a mix of fast-food chains, and grocery stores. Jungle Jim’s International Market, for instance, has over 200,000 square feet of imported and specialty goods, and it’s become a regional destination for its annual food festivals and calendar of cooking classes. There are two Skyline Chili locations in Fairfield, fitting for a city home to its corporate headquarters, and residents will also find a variety of old-fashioned diners, donut shops and casual Mexican eateries throughout the area.
