Quiet Fayetteville neighborhood close to Fort Bragg
Just south Fort Bragg, Lake Pines is a sprawling rural neighborhood with access to major Fayetteville roadways. “It’s a very inexpensive place to live, so a lot of people live there, not just military,” says Alexandria Boykin, area native and Realtor at Fathom Realty. “The convenience to the base is a benefit, but it’s not filled with military like it once was.” Both military personnel and citizens enjoy the area’s trickling creeks and rural feel, as well as the recently constructed section of I-295.

Getting around Lake Pines by car
Immediately south of Fort Bragg and 5 miles northwest of downtown Fayetteville, Lake Pines is a car-dependent area 70 miles south of Raleigh. Interstate 295 was recently expanded through Fayetteville (though some portions are still under construction) and now bounds Lake Pines on the neighborhood’s northern side. “They’ve widened the roads to make the highway come through,” Boykin says. “It currently doesn’t go further than Fayetteville, but it’s going to connect around Hope Mills.” This new road connects to I-95 and expedites interstate travel for residents. The neighborhood’s southern border is bound by U.S. 401, another major road connecting locals around the town.

Murchison Road has a variety of businesses, including chains like Dollar General and local spots like BJ’s Used Book Exchange, as well as several churches. Local restaurants along Murchison include Mary Lee & Mike’s Soul Food, serving Southern classics, and ThighMeat Grill, serving grilled and roasted meats and veggies. Just east of the neighborhood, Ramsey Street offers even more variety. “Ramsey Street has been built up because Methodist University is there. Anywhere off Ramsey Street, they have restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, and a nice Walmart.

Many lakes and streams dried up
Some parts of Lake Pines might be vulnerable to flooding, but Fayetteville’s changing landscape means that maps aren’t always accurate. “A lot of things in Fayetteville are centered around creeks and lakes that aren’t there anymore. Now a lot of them are dried up, and there’s just trenches and ditches there,” Boykin says. “A map may say there’s a river behind your house, but it may not actually be there. You just don’t know until you go out there.” That means that some older flood maps may overstate the actual flood risk of an area with a body of water that no longer exists.
