Take to the skies in Sierra Sky Park
Nestled in North Fresno by the San Joaquin River, Sierra Sky Park is full of outdoor exploration — and aeronautical recreation. The neighborhood derives its name from Sierra Sky Park, a small, privately owned airfield that became the first aviation community in the world. Streets 100 feet wide allow passage to and from the runway, and garages are large enough to double as aircraft hangers. Essentially, aviation enthusiasts can park their planes like cars in front of their houses. And according to Diana Spino, broker at Kala American Realty, “If a homebuyer builds a new home or reconstructs a property by the runway, they are required to build a hanger, even if they don’t own a plane.”
Sierra Sky Park was America's first aviation community.
The Sierra Sky Park airport is a unique private airport for use by residents of the area.

Plane-sized double garages
Sierra Sky Park’s residential corridors are populated by Mediterranean-inspired or contemporary-style houses, primarily built in the 1980s through recent times. Some blocks are lined with lush greenery, and some are lined with sidewalks. While homes farther away from the airport don’t have to adhere to hanger guidelines, most properties still sport spacious driveways and impressive double garages large enough to fit a plane. Properties typically list between $350,000 and $580,000, although some inch up to $780,000.

Sierra Sky students soar academically
Sierra Sky Park is a long-spanning neighborhood, so students may be zoned differently from one another, depending on where they live. Some students can attend Norman Liddell Elementary School, followed by Rio Vista Middle School, which has a gifted and talented program for high-achieving students. Both schools earn a B-plus rating from Niche. High schoolers are usually zoned for Bullard High School, which has a B on Niche and holds the No. 5 spot on Niche’s list of standout high schools in the Fresno area.

Riverbottom Park is a go-to spot for river recreation. Hiking, fishing, kayaking and more can all be done from there. For a more traditional city park experience, Koligian Park features a small playground, a shaded pavilion, a basketball court, a field sports area and a dog park. Orchid Park is another popular option, as it has a baseball diamond and tennis courts in addition to its playground and pavilion. Sierra Sky Park is a bit of a golfer’s paradise, too, with three different courses within the neighborhood. Riverside Golf Course, in the northwest corner of Sierra Sky Park, is a public circuit owned by the City of Fresno. It opened in 1939 and is now the second-oldest course in Fresno. Bluff Pointe Golf Course and Learning Center sits in the middle of the neighborhood and contains a nine-hole layout of 1,729 yards. San Joaquin Country Club resides on the east side of Sierra Sky Park and has an 18-hole course that hosted the NCAA national championship in 1983. The club also includes two tennis courts, two dining venues and a pool. All three of Sierra Sky Park’s courses offer lessons.

Marketplace at El Paseo is where locals like to spend an afternoon (if not the whole day) shopping. This 650,000-square-foot retail center just west of Sierra Sky Park features many brand names, such as Target, Old Navy, Petco and Marshalls. Shoppers can grab something to eat at a mix of chain restaurants and locally known spots inside the center, like Simply Pita. Just east of Sierra Sky is Mad Duck Craft Brewing Northwest, where locals like to enjoy a laidback lunch with craft beer. The Octavian double dry-hopped Imperial IPA is among the popular picks there. Mad Duck is right across from Sunset Square Shopping Center, which features a Save Mart supermarket and restaurants like Daddy Waffles, a classic American breakfast spot, and Bog House Pub.

Catch a plane to work
On the ground, Sierra Sky Park is about 12 miles north of Downtown Fresno via California State Route 99. Most residents get around the community and into downtown by car, although some take Fresno Area Express buses that stop along West Herndon Avenue, the area’s southern border. And, of course, because of the unique nature of Sierra Sky Park’s aviation community, some commuters just hitch a ride to and from work in their private planes. All others can catch flights at Fresno Yosemite International Airport about 12 miles away.
