Lower prices than neighboring towns
With more people moving to the area, Glenwood has seen an influx of houses on the market, both old and new. Seasoned ranch-style homes and split-levels can go for anywhere between $200,000 to $300,000. More modern ones with a prairie-style influence and stone architecture can get up to $350,000. These properties have lawns of their own and line streets alongside two-story modern traditional homes. For those who want a smaller house at a lower cost, one-story manufactured homes with around 800 square feet can be found for $125,000 to $170,000. “The prices are fair – you can get a great quality home for a lower price point. Especially compared to the rest of the area,” Johnson says.

Walking trails that become skiing paths
Glenwood has several parks and nature preserves in the area for people to explore. Glenwood Woods is split into two regions, North and South, but both have walking and biking trails that are good for cross-country skiing when it snows. Brownell Woods is also a nature preserve with trails that visitors can stretch their legs out on. With North Creek winding through the forested trees, there’s ample opportunity for creek fishing. For more sporty recreational activities, residents can visit Hickory Glen Park to shoot hoops on its basketball court or play a game on the football field. Veteran’s Memorial Park and Skyline Pool is the place to be in the summertime with its outdoor pool and bocce ball courts.

Breakfast in town before shopping next door
Shopping for essentials is easy in Glenwood. Main Street is filled with many commercial shops, including clothing stores like Kids Boutique, a beauty supply store, a salon and more. Many start their day at Dion’s Breakfast Café with one of their popular breakfast skillets. For more options, residents will travel to other nearby towns. “That’s the beautiful thing about being close to other neighborhoods: everything you need is just minutes away,” Johnson says. Park Place shopping mall in Homewood is a 4-mile drive away and has a plethora of name-brand stores, including Target, Home Depot, TJ Maxx, Famous Footwear and Walmart – everything one may need, from clothing to furniture. There are also several fast-food chains in the area like Krispy Kreme or MOD Pizza. Residents buy their groceries at the Jewel-Osco or Aldi within the shopping center.

A highly rated high school
Families living in Glenwood have several nearby school districts that they can send their children to. Longwood Elementary School and Winston Churchill School together handle kindergarten through fifth grade. Despite Longwood’s D-plus grade on Niche, Winston Churchill makes up for it with a B grade and 12-1 student ratio. From there, students can attend James Hart School in the Brookwood School District with its B-plus Niche grade. Most children finish out their grade school education at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Its A grade on Niche, International Baccalaureate Program and Fine Arts Academy are some of the many reasons why it stands out as an outstanding school.

Bordered by major routes
As a primarily residential area, most people drive their own vehicles to get around Glenwood. With Route 1 and Route 394 straddling the village, it’s easy for commuters to hop onto Interstate 80 and get where they need to go. Bus stops all along South Halsted Street can take natives on quick trips throughout the area, and the Lansing Municipal Airport is 3.8 miles away for longer distances.
