Home to the University of Southern Maine campus and its own little “downtown” district, the town of Gorham gives residents a quieter suburban lifestyle with easy access to the nearby urban amenities. “Gorham is a historical town, incorporated in 1764,” says Helen La Count, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty of Greater Portland. Not only does the town serve as a popular bedroom community for Portland, but its public school system also makes it an attractive option for families, says Mariah Mallory, a Gorham native and real estate agent with North Point Realty of Westbrook. Students in this town are served by Gorham School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche and is named in Niche’s top 20 “Districts with the Best Teachers in Maine” 2024 list. Gorham receives an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2, which is lower compared to the national average of 4.

Grab a slice from Gorham House of Pizza
For a range of shopping and dining opportunities, locals can head to Gorham's quaint “downtown” district, which features everything from upscale restaurants and pizzerias to bookstores and boutique gift shops. MK Kitchen, Sebago Brewing Company and Gorham House of Pizza are just a few of the restaurants that La Count recommends. At Sebago Brewing Company, diners can enjoy pub fare and craft beers; MK Kitchen is a popular New American eatery that also features a bar area. The popular Gorham House of Pizza is a family-owned town staple, having served patrons in the community for more than 30 years. Most of Gorham’s commercial properties and eateries are located along Main Street, which runs through the center of town; also situated just off this road are the Hannaford grocery store and the Village Mall, which features Goodwill thrift store and Walgreens. “There’s easy walkability in the downtown section,” La Count says.

Home to the University of Southern Maine campus
Young learners can kickstart their education at either Great Falls Elementary or Village Elementary School, both of which are rated A-minus and are ranked in Niche’s top 10 “Best Public Elementary Schools in Cumberland County” list. Older students might attend Gorham Middle School, an A-minus-rated institution, and later head to the B-rated Gorham High School, named one of 2024’s top 20 public high schools in the state by Niche. Students at Gorham High School can also enroll in early college credit programs in partnership with the University of Southern Maine. “The artistic expression from the students at USM has a palpable influence on the community,” Mallory says. "With Scarborough, when I think of their schools, I think of sports. When I think of Gorham, I think of the arts."

Multi-use facilities at Costello Sports Complex
Although the Costello Sports Complex is located on the University of Southern Maine campus, its athletic facilities are still frequently used by locals and the surrounding community, says La Count. Among these facilities is an indoor track that encircles several multi-use courts and a state-of-the-art fitness center that offers weekly classes. For outdoor recreation, locals can head to Robie Park, a small town park that features the Robie Ballfield, a basketball court and a fully-equipped playground area. Those who bike, scooter and board might check out the Gorham Skatepark, which has several cement features, including launch ramps, sloped rails and half-pipes; the park is also situated right next to an updated basketball court area. Surrounding Gorham are acres of natural land preserves, many of which offer dense forest areas that feature extensive hiking trails for all skill levels.

New and old residential architecture collide
In terms of residential architecture, Gorham certainly brings together the old and the new: “There’s lots of historical homes and brick buildings, as well as newer condos and homes,” La Count says. “And there are beautiful old farmhouses and barns outside of the downtown area.” A majority of single-family homes in this town sell between $400,000 and $800,000, but there are a handful of outliers on either end of that range. Ranch-style dwellings, Cape Cods and split-level homes that feature traditional farmhouse and Colonial architecture are all commonly seen housing styles in this area. Many properties often also have garages and paved driveways, as most are situated on spacious lots. The University of Southern Maine campus has several dormitories and residence halls for students to stay in, although some students do opt to live off campus.

Community comes together at Summer Thursday events
During the warmer months, residents can head to the Little Falls Recreation Area to enjoy Summer Thursdays, a weekly series of free outdoor events that hosts local vendors and live music and serves as a community gathering opportunity. Every June for the past 40 years, the town has also fallen in the pathway of the Trek Across Maine event, a state-wide cycling tournament.
Take the Husky Line into Portland
The Greater Portland Metro bus service operates the Husky Line throughout Gorham, which connects residents to both the University of Southern Maine campuses and the nearby cities of Westbrook and Portland. Route 202 runs through town and travels up north towards the town of Windham, while Route 25 travels towards the coast and the city. Those looking to catch a flight can drive approximately 8 miles to reach the Portland International Jetport.
