Once a Native American hunting ground
Only 10 miles from downtown Lansing, Haslett is a mostly rural community that gives its residents a peaceful and luxurious life right by Lake Lansing — outdoor recreation is plentiful, and spacious properties help homeowners live comfortably. What was once a hunting and fishing ground for local Native American tribes became a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts by the 1900s and continues to be one today. Despite the area’s secluded feel, plenty of shopping and dining options are nearby to keep people entertained.

Outdoor exploration on the lake
Haslett is known for its many parks and areas of exploration. “There are a ton of recreational areas by the lake. A lot of the county parks are pretty popular too,” says Joe Udry, a Buyers Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Professionals who has over 20 years of experience and lives in the Lansing area. Lake Lansing Park North has 530 acres of mature woodlands and marshes for people to enjoy. Visitors can walk 10 miles along the trails, play a game of basketball or use the boat launch to get out on the water. Cross-country skiing is a popular activity when it snows. On the other side of the area, Lake Lansing Park South is a 30-acre site that includes a sandy beach and multi-purpose dock. Locals can go for a swim, fish for Bluegill or take their little ones to the beach playground. For those who want to visit a more traditional park, Hillbrook Park, Orlando Park and Towner Road Park are all in the community and offer amenities such as playgrounds, pickleball courts, tennis courts and more.

Prices increase when heading towards the lake
Most properties in Haslett surround Lansing Lake and stand on their own large plot of land, though there are a few that front residential streets. Two-story homes with a colonial-style influence can be found for anywhere between $250,000 to $350,000, along with brightly colored split levels. Brick ranch-style homes are a bit cheaper and can get as low as $130,000. Farther out into the rural side of the community, large Craftsman homes and farmhouses with front porches can range from $325,000 to $745,000. For those who want a lake-front property with balconies and access to the water, the price can get up to one million, depending on square footage.
Closer to the center of Haslett you will find more Split-Level and Ranch style homes.

30 student clubs and organizations to join
Families living in Haslett can trust Haslett Public Schools for their children’s education. After finishing first grade at Wilkshire Early Childhood Center, little ones can either go to Vera Rayla Elementary School or Murphy Elementary School. Vera Rayla has a B-plus grade on Niche and Murphy has an A-minus. From there, students can attend Haslett Middle School with its A Niche grade and above-average test scores. Haslett High School is one of the better schools in the area for children to get an education. Rated No. 4 in Best Public High Schools in Lansing Area by Niche, Haslett High has an A-minus grade, offers over 30 student clubs and has a great STEM program.

Rural yet near major shopping hubs
Even as a primarily rural area, Haslett has plenty of retail and restaurant options for its residents. The Watershed Tavern & Grill has rustic décor and an outdoor deck that sets the mood for its pulled pork and specialty bloody Mary beverages. For something a bit more upscale, Blue Gill Grill is known for their seafood platters, bold fish tacos and traditional pan-fried bluegill filets. When it comes to shopping, residents will travel 5 miles south to get to Meridian Charter Township and its retail area at the intersection of Marsh Road and Michigan Highway 43. “That’s our commerce center in the area. You’ve got everything from Meijer to Target and Kroger,” Udry says. In addition to the name-brand stores, there are several fast-food restaurants in the area like Chick-fil-A and Buddy’s Pizza. Meridian Mall is just across the street and has every department store imaginable, from Macy’s and Aeropostale to Dick’s Sporting Goods. For a fun night out, locals visit High Caliber Karting and Entertainment at the edge of the mall.

Cars are needed in Haslett
As spread out as Haslett is, most residents rely on their own vehicles to get around. US Interstate 69 and Michigan Highway 43 are both close to the community and give people the ability to hop on and travel where they need to go. Capital Region International Airport is 13 miles away on the other side of Lansing.
