Lakefront living in the heart of Piedmont Triad
Old Mill Estates sits right on the northern outskirts of High Point, where homes sprawl across large lots and Oak Hollow Lake beckons for waterfront recreation and enjoyment. This rural suburb sits at the very heart of the Piedmont Triad in the curve of Interstate 74, making it a desirable fusion of slower-paced living and easy commuting. “Being near Interstate 74, you’ve got convenience to the whole Triad and tons of shopping,” says Brad Moser, broker and owner of Broadleaf Realty. “Simplicity of travel is a big draw, and it’s also a smaller community.” Keller Williams Realtor Susie Mickey agrees, noting the neighborhood’s proximity to outdoor recreation and competitive price point, too.
From multi-acre ranch-style homes to suburban New Traditional
Old Mill Estates fuses rural and suburban living at the edge of High Point’s city limits. Wide streets cut through the sloping hillsides, framed on either side by mature oaks and maples dotted across grassy lawns. Lots tend to be large, spanning half an acre to multiple acres. Many of the homes on these spacious plots were built in the 1960s and ‘70s and are ranch-style or split-level, though a few custom-built homes have more eclectic layouts and features. Newer developments from the 1990s onward feature New Traditional homes on smaller lots with fewer trees, with some brand-new constructions and even a handful of townhouses. Single-family homes list between $200,000 and $500,000, while townhouses are priced from $150,000 to $370,000.
Fishing and festivals at Oak Hollow Lake
Stretching across 800 acres just east of the neighborhood is Oak Hollow Lake, one of High Point’s most popular outdoor attractions. Oak Hollow Park encompasses the numerous facilities surrounding the lake, providing a backdrop for all kinds of activities. Anglers can cast a line from the marina pier, hop in a boat, and follow the Oak Hollow Fishing Trail to 11 sites equipped with fish attractors to draw big game species. “People do live on the lake, but you can’t have a dock or a pier, so you have to launch from the marina,” Moser says. On the same grounds as Oak Hollow Park, Oak Hollow Festival Park hosts some of the city’s biggest and best-known events, including the Fourth of July Uncle Sam Jam and the John Coltrane Jazz & Blues Fest. The Oak Hollow Tennis Center features indoor and outdoor courts, where High Point Parks and Recreation hosts classes for players of all ages and skill levels. The Tennis Center is adjacent to Oak Hollow Golf Course, which curves around the lake’s shores to provide a scenic setting for its 18-hole course. Athletes of other varieties might head to the High Point Athletic Complex, just south of the neighborhood next to Shadybrook Elementary. This epicenter for the city’s youth sporting events features soccer fields, baseball fields and a football field with an eight-lane track.
Service learning and nearby High Point schools
Guilford County Schools serves Old Mill Estates students. Shadybrook Elementary is just south of the neighborhood and scores a B grade from Niche. Ferndale Middle earns a C-plus and is right next to High Point Central High, which receives a B-minus. The high school offers the International Baccalaureate program and awards service-learning diplomas to encourage community engagement and civic responsibility.
Chain and big-box shopping along Main Street
Big-box shopping centers line Main Street just south of the neighborhood. Between Hartley Drive and Eastchester Drive, grocers such as Publix, Harris Teeter, Food Lion and Walmart provide multiple options for everyday errand runs within 2 to 3 miles of home. Other stores, including Lowe’s Home Improvement, Hobby Lobby and T.J. Maxx, cluster alongside thrift shops, car dealerships and chain retailers. Families flock to AMC High Point 8 for a fun night out to catch the latest flick. Though dozens of fast-food drive-thus populate this area, locals support longstanding eateries like Sanibel’s Seafood Restaurant. Kitschy’s ocean-themed décor adorns the walls of the restaurant’s old-fashioned dining room, where the focus is on serving up fresh fried fish. There’s a variety of dining closer to High Point University and downtown. Magnolia Blue slings Southern specialties with a modern flair, while Granny’s Donuts & Bakery is famous for its apple fritters.
Neighborhood history and community centers
Although it's primarily residential, Oak Mill Estates has a lively history. “There actually used to be a pre-NASCAR racetrack in that area, back in the 1940s or so,” Moser says, though he adds that the area is more family-oriented nowadays. The Triad Nepalese Community Center is situated squarely in the neighborhood. The High Point Elks Lodge 1155 is also close by and is known for its charitable events and members-only pool.
Traverse the Triad via Interstate 74
Old Mill Estates is a car-dependent suburb situated along Interstate 74, making for easy travel across the Piedmont Triad. “I-74 is the pipeline from the mountains to the beach, and there’s no traffic jams around High Point,” Moser says. Downtown High Point is roughly 5 miles south, or about a 10- to 15-minute drive. Downtown Greensboro and Winston-Salem are each approximately 20 miles away, a trip that takes 20-30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
