A pillar of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area

Hoover was incorporated as a city only 57 years ago, with just 410 citizens and four blocks of land. Today, the city has become a pillar of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Region and boasts a population of over 92,000. It’s home to some of the area’s largest company headquarters, including AT&T of Alabama, BlueCross BlueShield and McLeod Software. Other major employers, like the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and its top-rated hospital, are fewer than 10 miles away via Interstate 65. On Niche, Hoover’s public school system ranks as the fifth-best district in Alabama. Along with major employers and A-rated schools, the city “has plenty of things to do,” says Jeremy Galloway, a Hoover resident and Realtor with EXP Realty, LLC Central. “There are hiking and biking trails next to the Cahaba River, and they’ve got festivals going on all the time.”

More home and price options in Hoover

Hoover has a much larger housing market than neighboring cities like Homewood and Vestavia Hills. It has a population of just over 92,000, so “you have a lot more properties to choose from and a much wider price range to work with,” Galloway says. Though inventory is higher here, “it’s still a strong seller’s market,” says Dianna Howell, a longtime Hoover resident and Realtor with Keller Williams. Home sales dropped by 23% in 2023, while the average price rose from $485,000 to $505,000. New construction luxury homes in the gated Blackridge community cost just over $1,000,000, and townhomes throughout the city can range from $270,000 to $550,000.

"A great little central hub"

Interstates 65 and 459 meet at the east side of Hoover. This easy highway access helps make the city “a great little central hub,” Galloway says. “We’re less than 4 hours from the Gulf Shores, 2 hours from Atlanta and 5 hours from the mountains in Tennessee.” Birmingham is the closest major city, just 10 miles north. While cars are the fastest way to get around, fixed-route buses are accessible through the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport offers direct flights to 21 U.S. cities.

Hoover City School District earns an A-plus on Niche, making it one of the best in Alabama. It’s also one of the state’s largest school systems, with over 13,000 students and 1,800 faculty members. There are 10 elementary schools, one intermediate school, three middle schools and two high schools. The district opened a separate trade school on Old Montgomery Highway in 2019. With state-of-the-art facilities, the Riverchase Career Connection Center offers five programs specializing in the Culinary Arts, Cyber Innovation, Fire & Emergency Services, Health Science and Skill Trades.

New park projects in 2024

Moss Rock Preserve sprawls across nearly 350 acres in the center of Hoover. It has scenic hiking trails with waterfall views and a central boulder field for harness-free climbing. While it may be the largest, the Preserve is just one of Hoover’s 32 public parks. Local youth sports leagues practice at The Hoover Met Complex. The 150-acre multi-use facility also hosts the SEC Baseball Tournament each spring. “That’s kind of what we’re known for here,” Galloway says. “Everyone tailgates and packs out the stadium for basically the whole week.” The city also features six golf courses, one of which is a part of Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The Hoover City Council announced a new plan for the Parks and Recreation Department in 2024. Over the next five to ten years, the city plans to add a paved multi-use trail along the Cahaba River, which flows for about 20 miles through the south side of Hoover. The trail will include rest areas and five river access points with kayak launches.

Suburban shopping malls and a new entertainment district

Riverchase Galleria opened in 1986 as Hoover’s first major shopping and dining complex. The 1.9 million square foot mall remains open today, but Galloway says The Summit is now the area’s main commercial center. It offers a walkable shopping and dining experience with over 100 stores and restaurants. While technically outside the city limits, Galloway says, The Summit is “still considered a part of Hoover.”

In 2019, the city opened its first entertainment district at the intersection of Interstate 459 and Highway 150. The 43-acre development, Stadium Trace Village, has a walkable Main Street section with local boutiques, eateries and other small businesses. Galloway recommends stopping by Taco Mama. “It’s kind of a small local chain, but it’s really well known here in Hoover. Everyone loves it.” In 2024, the city began expanding the entertainment district to include another 120,000 square foot commercial space and an outdoor amphitheater.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
