East of trendy Houston Heights and 4 miles north of Downtown Houston is Northside Village, or "Northside," as neighbors call it. This historically Latino community was founded near the now-defunct Hardy Rail Yards in the 1880s when suburbs were still a new idea in Houston. Development declined after World War II but took off again after Northside was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Northside's population of 25,000 is expanding, but it still has a small-town feeling. "There's a bit of gentrification going on in the area. You're starting to see the big townhomes being built next to old little homes," says Natalie Beasley, the administrative assistant at Northside's Waldorf-inspired Bayou Village School. "The neighborhood still feels the same as it did when we first came here," she adds. "People are very kind, and everyone walks around; the kids always wave to everyone from the playground."

Making room for artists at Hardy Yards Apartments
Some of Northside's bungalows and craftsmans settle on small lots just steps from community centers. As Houston's population swells, many are being completely remodeled from the inside out, and as Beasley suggests, there's been a rise in modern-style housing developments. The new mixed-used Hardy Yards Apartments is a redevelopment of the now-defunct Hardy Rail Yards, which now holds a thriving art community with lofts and rental boutique spaces for artisans. A 1940s 2,000 square foot craftsman in a prime location might go for around $530,000 whereas the average sale price for a home in Northside is around $390,000.

Bayou Village School offers Waldorf-inspired education
The Houston Independent School District serves Northside students. Some may attend Ketelsen Elementary School, Marshall Middle School and Northern High School. All of them earn C ratings from Niche. Houston ISD participates in school choice, meaning parents can elect to send their kids to magnet programs and charter schools within its ISD. The nonprofit Bayou Village School, serving toddler's through to sixth grade, is not a part of Houston's choice program, but it is working to make its offerings more accessible. "I think we supplied $90,000 to $70,000 dollars worth of financial aid in the past 2 years. We really try to raise as much money as we can to offer this to everyone," Beasley says.

Taking the METRORail
Residents can use the METRORail line to travel throughout Houston, including downtown, with bus stops along Fulton Street, Hogan Street, and more. The area is also highly walkable. For trips near and far, William P. Hobby is 14 miles south via Interstate 69. Anytime locals want to drive, they have this highway just east, Interstate 45 just west, Interstate 610 to the north, and Interstate 10 to the south. North Houston Medical Plaza on North Freeway is six miles north via I-45 with a dental center, birthing center, lab facility and more.

Locals stay active in Northside
Pickleball is big in Houston and leagues meet up at the tennis court at Moody Park. Its community center also has a basketball court and a free weight room and parents can sign their kids up for its after-school program. There's a metro stop right outside the center, making trips convenient. The Little Whiteoak Bayou, which passes through Northside, is less used for swimming and fishing, and more so a popular hiking area. Hennessy Park is a popular place to play kickball.

Dance parties at White Oak Music Hall
White Oak Music Hall on North Main Street has two stages and an amphitheater where a wide-range of up and coming artists play, and a dance floor for dance parties. Arnold Brewing Company has hosted its annual two-day Oktoberfest since 2012 with live polka music and glass boot mugs full of ale.
