Best known as home to Indiana’s largest shopping mall, Castleton is a neighborhood that gives Indianapolis homebuyers plenty of amenities. It was established as a village over 170 years ago and became its own town several decades later. The first chapter in Castleton’s history saw it as a prosperous industrial center for brickmaking and charcoal. Then, in the early 1970s, the neighborhood (now annexed into greater Indianapolis) welcomed Castleton Square Mall. With over 1 million square feet of retail space, it’s held the title of the state’s largest shopping mall for 50 years and counting.

Castleton Square is the epicenter of shopping, dining and entertainment in Indy’s far northside, featuring everything from retail giants like Macy’s and JCPenney to Claire’s and the LEGO Store for younger visitors. Mallgoers can catch the latest Hollywood fare and indie darlings alike at the AMC movie theater. Vintage arcade fanatics of all ages can visit the locally owned Boss Battle Games, with joystick-operated oldies like “Mortal Kombat,” racing simulators and classic pinball machines — no coins required. And while food at Castleton Square is mainly limited to big-name eateries like Charleys Cheesesteaks and Chick-fil-A, Ale Emporium lies just down the road. Along with live music and a nearly endless drink menu, this regional chain “probably has the best chicken wings in Indianapolis,” according to Bob Kincaid, Kincaid Realtors real estate agent and area native. When locals need to check off their weekly grocery run, Trader Joe’s is just on the other side of Interstate 465. However, many locally owned markets selling Asian and Latin American goods can be found throughout the neighborhood.

One-stop-spot for outdoor recreation
Good times in Castleton aren’t limited to the indoors. Sahm Park has been around even longer than the mall and is adjacent to many of the neighborhood’s housing developments. Covering over 85 acres, the park offers virtually any kind of outdoor recreation locals might prefer. Whether visitors want to play a game of soccer, tennis or basketball, dip in the public pool during the warmer months, or master 18 holes of traditional golf or nine of disc golf, locals can while away hours of fresh-aired free time here.

While Castleton Square and other infrastructure dominate the southern portion of the neighborhood, northern Castleton is full of single- and multi-unit homes of various sizes. Most properties were built along with or after the mall’s construction, meaning lots of late-20th-century architecture can be found within self-contained developments. Condominiums that cost between $170,000 and $265,000 are primarily concentrated in the north of Castleton. Developments like Steeplechase offer duplexes, while Berkley Place specializes in three-story town houses. Single-unit homes in the neighborhood include ranches, split-levels and traditional American suburban models that typically list between $220,000 and $350,000.

Rigorous curricula for students of all ages
Students can attend Mary Castle Elementary School, which has a B-minus rating on Niche. The school offers gifted and high-ability programming and has a school of International Studies. Older students can attend Belzer Middle School, which has a C on Niche and is one of nine certified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) schools in the state. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum is also offered to students. Lawrence Central High School serves high schoolers; students take a variety of rigorous curricula, including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Advanced College Project, Core 40 and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). The school earns a B rating from Niche.

With Interstates 69 and 465 bordering Castleton, commuters can reach the city within 30 minutes and easily access the surrounding region. Dozens of businesses sit within a corporate park in the southern corner of the neighborhood, making for a quick drive for many employees. IndyGo bus stops surround Castleton Square and line 82nd Street, making public transportation an accessible option for residents. Should a medical emergency arise, residents can rest easy knowing a large Community Health Network campus, including a general hospital, is just on the other side of the interstate. When locals need to go out of state, Indianapolis International Airport is 26 miles southwest.
