Why locals love the walkability and culture in Fountain Square
Quirky, historic and entirely its own, Fountain Square is one of Indianapolis ’ most distinctive neighborhoods. This neighborhood has been one of Indy's cultural and commercial centers for over a century, evolving from its origins as farmland into a thriving hub of creativity and commerce. Packed with bars, restaurants, art galleries and unique shops, the neighborhood is one of the city's best districts for shopping and nightlife. Residents enjoy walkability, historic architecture and vibrant local culture at spots like The Murphy Arts Center and the iconic Fountain Square Theatre Building.

Where to shop, dine and drink in Fountain Square
Locally owned shops give Fountain Square an authentic, down-to-earth vibe. Virginia Avenue is lined with eclectic stores, bars and eateries. Pop culture permeates the neighborhood at spots like Hero House Comics and Elf 'N Moon Gaming and Hobby. There’s plenty of vintage stores, from Zodiac Vintage to Square Cat Vinyl and Lily’s Labyrinth Fountain Square. You can browse unique wares at Rooftop Fruit, a contemporary general store, or pick up a new plant at Snakeroot Botanicals. There’s also tons of restaurants, from fine dining at Geraldine’s Supper Club and Lounge to juicy burgers at the metal music-themed Kuma’s Corner. “You won’t find an O’Charley’s here,” says Realtor Bethany Schultz of United Real Estate Indianapolis. In Fountain Square, you can:
Sip lattes at shops like Bovaconti Coffee, Black House Café and Nine Lives Café and Cat Lounge
Sample diverse cuisine at restaurants like Siam Square, Revolucion and Yaso Jamaican Grill
Grab cocktails at The Inferno Room, The Brass Ring Lounge and Sam’s Silver Circle
Enjoy craft beverages at Fountain Square Brew Co., Upland Brewing Co. and WildEye Lounge, which serves up cannabis-infused drinks and mocktails

From historic bungalows to modern designs, housing is diverse here
“Fountain Square has a very diverse housing inventory,” says Jess Martin, co-founder and broker at Maywright Property Co. “If someone says they want to live in Fountain Square, that tells me nothing about what kind of house they like, because they can get anything there. You can get new, you can get old, you can get a townhome and be right in the hustle and bustle of the main strip, or you can be removed from all of that and be on a quieter street.” Cottages and bungalows are common here, but you’ll also find American Foursquares and other 19th-century styles. New homes often sport modern farmhouse or sleek, asymmetrical contemporary designs. “It’s for people who value neighbors, walkability, and porch-sitting," Schultz says.
You can find fixer-uppers from about $80,000 up to the high $100,000s. Renovated compact cottages range from the low $100,000s to the low $300,000s. Most renovated homes fall between $200,000 and the mid-$400,000s, while larger homes and new builds start around $400,000 and can reach the high $700,000s. Townhouses and duplexes range from the mid-$200,000s to the low $400,000s.

Unique attractions from duck pin bowling to swing dance lessons
There’s no shortage of things to do in and around the neighborhood. The historic Fountain Square Theatre Building hosts weekly two-step and swing dancing lessons. The building is home to Atomic Bowl, a retro spot for duck pin bowling, a miniature version that uses smaller pins and balls. Finch Park has a playground and the Lilly Boys and Girls Club in the neighborhood. “You’re also really close to Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil, so that makes it really nice if you’re into sports or concerts,” Martin says.
Live music and local art are integral to the neighborhood’s vibe
The arts are at the heart of Fountain Square, which is evidenced by the murals, public art and the iconic fountain that anchors the neighborhood at the intersections of Virginia, Shelby and Prospect streets. Hi-Fi, with its three stages, welcomes both local and international performers. Radio Radio is a live music venue and lounge, while White Rabbit Cabaret is known for its burlesque and drag shows. The Murphy Arts Center, another cornerstone of the arts community, showcases local artists and craft vendors during First Fridays and interactive exhibits on Third Saturdays, both events free to the public.
Fountain Square is home to many shops full of character and personality, like Hero House Comics.
Fountain Square community volunteers host events like Scare in the Square.

Nearby interstates and the Cultural Trail connect residents
The neighborhood is highly walkable and bikeable, and drivers enjoy easy access to Interstate 70 and I-65. Downtown Indianapolis is just a mile away, and bikers can hop on the roughly 10-mile Cultural Trail to commute downtown. “The Cultural Trail runs through Fountain Square, so its connectivity to the rest of the city is really great given that it has the highway and the Cultural Trail,” Martin says.
