Location and sense of community keying neighborhood rebound

Between downtown Indianapolis and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Haughville is a historic Near Westside neighborhood taking steps towards a brighter future. Community involvement and location are selling points as Haughville works to overcome decades of disinvestment and one of the city’s highest crime rates. Realtor Mike Harris Jr., who grew up in Haughville and now runs a non-profit financial literacy organization called Buy Young, has witnessed the neighborhood’s improvement, which is buoyed by a mixture of renovated houses and newly built homes on established lots. “It’s growing super-fast,” Harris says. “It’s making positive change. It’s becoming more modern, a lot more diverse as well.”

Houses date back to the turn of the 20th century

Many houses in Haughville were built in the first three decades after Indianapolis annexed the former town in 1897. These homes were built for immigrants, primarily Slovenians, who worked in the two iron foundries and meatpacking plant that fueled the neighborhood’s economy at the time. Bungalows and Craftsman houses are common; even homes built in the 2020s provide modern interpretations of these styles. Fixer-uppers and investment properties sell for less than $115,000, and most move-in ready homes range between $125,000 and $240,000. “They are not mansions by any means,” Harris says. “They’re medium-size homes great for a starting family, with parks in walking distance from every block.”

Long's Bakery makes Indy's most famous doughnuts

Haughville residents have two grocery stores in the neighborhood: a Kroger on 10th Street and a DG Market on 16th Street. Haughville is also home to Indianapolis icon Long’s Bakery. Indy native David Letterman is a frequent connoisseur of Long’s signature doughnuts, and fellow talkshow legend Oprah Winfrey is also a fan. “Long’s Bakery has the best doughnuts in America, and I will stand on that,” Harris says. Citing Winfrey’s fandom, he notes, “If Oprah says it, it’s real.” A few blocks down 16th, King Ribs is another Haughville dining favorite. Other neighborhood restaurants, such as Super Tortas, Tamales Etc. and Che Chori Argentinian, reflect Haughville’s growing Hispanic community.

Indy 500 brings traffic and noise to the neighborhood each May

Traffic becomes an issue in Haughville on the last weekend of May. 16th Street is the primary road from downtown to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where more than 400,000 fans attend the annual Indianapolis 500. IMS is less than 2 miles west of the neighborhood, so residents also hear the roar of racecar engines during qualifying week and on race day. On most other weeks, Sunday mornings are busy, thanks to more than a dozen churches being in or near the neighborhood. Though the neighborhood’s demographics have changed over the decades, the Slovenian National Home on 10th Street is a reminder that Haughville once had one of the highest concentrations of Slovenian residents in the United States.

Decades-long efforts to reduce crime taking effect

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Haughville was notorious for having one of the highest crime rates among Indianapolis’ 99 neighborhoods. In response, the city built the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southwest District precinct next to Haughville Park. The neighborhood was also selected for the federally funded Operation Weed and Seed, which was created to decrease violent crime and gang activity through coordination with social services. The CAP Index rates overall crime a 6 of 10 in Haughville, though some violent crimes rate 8 of 10.
