Locals strum to a spirited beat in this lively town, home to the House of Guitars, a music store founded by two brothers in their mother’s basement. “It’s a famous music store where people from all over come to visit,” says Sharon Quataert, Realtor with Sharon Quataert Realty, who has been in the industry for over 30 years. Over the years, this unassuming store has been a must-see stop for world-renowned artists like Ozzie Osbourne, Cheap Trick, Metallica, and Mötley Crüe.

The House of Guitars isn’t the only home in Irondequoit. Most of this city was built between the 1920s and the 1940s, with many old-fashioned homes showcasing gumwood trim, drawing potential buyers looking for what Quataert says is old home charm. Modest Cape Cods, Tudors, ramblers and traditional colonials dot the tree-lined streets, with a median selling price hovering around $200,000. A-minus schools in West Irondequoit
East Irondequoit Central School District and West Irondequoit Central School District serve the community. “A lot of people like this area because this is where they want their children to go to school,” says Jeffrey DiVeronica of the West Irondequoit Central School District office. Students may attend Briarwood School for kindergarten through third grade, Iroquois Middle School for fourth through sixth grade and Dake Junior High School, all scoring a high A-minus on Niche. Boasting an A-minus, students then go on to Irondequoit High School, which offers a range of after-school activities, such as the ice hockey and Nordic skiing teams. However, this district is unique in that there are no school buses, while schools are right in the heart of the community. “I can look out my window and see kids playing football on the front lawn of the building. Parents can trust that their kids go out and play without worrying about safety concerns,” DiVeronica says.
Irondequoit High School welcomes new and returning students every year.
Franklin High School is also in the area and has one of the best athletic fields.

Summer days on the bay
Situated along the Irondequoit Bay, waterfront activities are popular amongst residents. “People are often seen cruising around on jet skis and pontoon boats in the summertime,” Quataert says. Locals can also be found hiking and fishing along the banks of Bay Park West or practicing their swing on the range at Durand Eastman Golf Course. Another local favorite is Seneca Park, spanning 297 acres. Residents here can stroll along the Genesee River gorge or feed the ducks at the duck pond. Camp Eastman is a popular weekend getaway spot in the summer, offering a camping ground, a playground and a splash pad to escape the heat. Those looking for adventure-filled days can head to Seabreeze Amusement Park or Seneca Park Zoo, offering programs for kids and teens, such as the Wildlife Action Crew, where local teenagers conduct a conservation case study across a six-week program.

For a bite to eat, I-Square offers a food hall for visitors in what is a “quintessential area with an old-town feel in the heart of the town,” Quataert says. Here, a range of restaurants like Hong Kong One Chinese, FishFace, and Dolce Fina Coffee satisfy even the pickiest of appetites. For a more upscale atmosphere, The Pasta Villa serves authentic Italian dishes for the whole family. Daily errand runs are a quick drive to Irondequoit Plaza, home to nail and hair salons, chain stores and Wegmans for groceries, while ALDI is across the street off Titus Avenue. Locals can also head to the seasonal Irondequoit Farmers’ Market on Thursday evenings for fresh produce, artisan crafts, and sweet treats.

Classic cars and quick commutes
Although Irondequoit hosts various annual events, the community meets for the classic car show every summer. Food trucks line the streets during the event, and children run around while their parents admire a display of classic Chevrolet Corvettes and Ford Mustangs. Getting around town is simple, with easy access to New York State Route 104 and bus stops scattered around Hudson Avenue.
