A residential town and "Special Tax District" in Montgomery County
Senior Sales Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate and longtime Chevy Chase View resident Helen Trybus says of the town, “It has beautiful, mature tree-lined streets and lots between a quarter and more than an acre.” Lots of this size may be out of place in this area of Montgomery County, but they’re also necessary considering the stately homes in town. Because Chevy Chase View is considered its own town and a “special tax district,” the area has its own charter and building regulations separate from the county, mainly to preserve the suburban, tree-dense subdivisions. Though this is a purely residential neighborhood with no commercial spots, less than a mile north are small strip malls with grocery stores, dining options and commuter rail access in Kensington.
Kensington Cabin Local Park is the closest green space
Residents can walk to Kensington Cabin Local Park, a 4-acre space with an activity building, playground and athletic fields. Trybus notes that the town is also close to walking and biking trails. “The whole area is very walkable,” she says. “I walk with my dog into downtown Kensington to get coffee and shop several times each week.” There’s also Cedarbrook Swim and Tennis Club for recreation. Homeowners of Chevy Chase View are eligible for their paid membership, which allows access to a six-lane swimming pool, diving board, and kiddie pool for children. There’s also a basketball court, four tennis courts and a pavilion for picnics. Just a mile south by the Capital Beltway entrance is an access point for Rock Creek Trail, 9 miles of pedestrian pathways through dense trees and beside the churning Rock Creek.
Spacious Tudor and colonial homes in Chevy Chase View
The zoning bylaws of Chevy Chase View normally don’t hinder the construction of big homes or prevent owners from decorating their lawns with plant life. In terms of architectural styles, Trybus notes that Chevy Chase View boasts various styles, including colonials, Tudors and expanded Cape Cods. “This is considered a high-end community, and some recent sales have been over $2 million. There are also a number of custom-built homes worth over $3 million.” At the lower end of the price range are remodeled brick colonials for about $1 million and brick ranch-style homes for $1.3 million. Also priced close to $1.3 million are remodeled brick Tudor styles originally built in the 1930s. At the $2 million mark are renovated craftsman-style homes and custom-built brick colonials. There are also some five-bedroom colonials fetching close to $2.6 million.
Kensington Shopping Center has unique, fast-casual dining options
Most residents head into nearby Kensington, less than a mile north, on foot or by car. Kensington Shopping Center has Java Nation for coffee and La Gelatteria for Italian gelato, an all-day breakfast menu with waffles and egg sandwiches, and a cocktail bar with spiked coffees and milkshakes. Along Kensington’s antique row, an area of shops and restaurants, but Trybus recommends Frankly Pizza, saying, “It’s the best pizza in the D.C. area,” try their red or white wood-fired Neapolitan pies. Other popular spots are The Dish & Dram, BabyCat Brewery and Knowles Station Wine & Co. Grab a sandwich, pastry, wine & beer and other take-out items from Old Town Market or restock the pantry at the nearby Safeway. There’s Artha Rini Indonesian Restaurant for more international tastes, serving authentic dishes like jackfruit curry and gado-gado, a salad with steamed vegetables, boiled eggs and fried tofu.
Hit the Kensington Farmers Market or the Town Fall Picnic
Trybus mentions that, “There are annual events where everyone comes together, such as our fall picnic where we have a barbecue truck and activities for kids.” Chevy Chase View’s Town Picnic is usually held in late September and is a fun way for adults to socialize and have kids ring in the new school year. Nearby is the Kensington Farmers Market at the Historic Train Station; residents can browse a selection of locally sourced seafood, meats and cheeses or baked goods year-round on Saturday mornings here.
Montgomery County schools offer college prep programs
Students in town are part of the highly rated Montgomery County Schools, including institutions like Rosemary Hills Elementary School, for preschool through second grade; it’s rated an A-minus overall on Niche and supported by an active parent-teacher association that enriches student life through book fairs. North Chevy Chase Elementary School and Silver Creek Middle School both have an A-rating. At North Chevy Chase Elementary, students can participate in Culture and Heritage Night, an evening of entertainment and dining that celebrates all the cultures that make up the school community. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School boasts a stellar A-plus rating on Niche and hosts Advanced Placement courses and an International Baccalaureate curriculum to prep students for college learning.
The Washington D.C. Temple is visible from miles around
Chevy Chase View is minutes from the Washington D.C. Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This massive Gothic-style church resembles a castle to onlookers. During the winter, the temple hosts the Washington D.C. Festival of Lights, with over 400,000 LEDs glowing in neon colors to celebrate the holidays.
Capital Beltway by car, or the Medical Center metro a couple miles away
Take Connecticut Avenue 4 miles south to reach the northwest border of D.C., and Chevy Chase View is less than a mile from the Capital Beltway for wider area access. It’s also 3 miles from the Medical Center metro station for Red Line access and a two-minute drive from Kensington’s MARC train station, which goes from Union Station in D.C. to Martinsville, West Virginia. “You feel like you’re far out from the city, but you’re not,” Trybus says. “You can access parts of Washington in 10 minutes.”
