A rural, historic town turned popular
Welcome to the Historic Gibbs Drive neighborhood in Knoxville, where the past comes alive. “It’s like a big slice of American pie and the most charming street to live on,” says Holli McCray, CEO of Home Marketing Group who has been selling homes for over two decades.
The community is part of the larger Fountain City area, originally an unincorporated community until its annexation in 1962. Once a rural area dominated by farms, this region eventually transformed into a popular resort destination. People flock to the area to escape the noise and pollution of the city and enjoy Fountain Lake, a large heart-shaped body of water that attracts locals daily.
Historic Gibbs Drive was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 with a distinct history, beginning as a streetcar suburb. During the 1920s, Knoxville experienced a surge in automobile popularity, leading to improved roads and the city’s annexation of large land areas. The influence of automobiles on the city’s development is seen in the many homes featuring historic garages. “This neighborhood is filled with sweet homes pulled out of a storybook, and you cannot keep a house on the market in the neighborhood; they go fast,” McCray says.
Duck ponds and pottery classes in Fountain City
Nature enthusiasts will find solace in the local parks surrounding the neighborhood. The Fountain City Lake, affectionately known as the “Duck Pond,” is located within Fountain City Park. It remains one of the area’s most prominent features drawing visitors with its serene beauty. “Historic Gibbs Drive is just so beautiful, and the type of neighborhood people settle down in and stay forever,” McCray says. Golfers visit Beaver Brook Golf & Country Club for its expansive course and swimming pool, while athletes head to Christenberry Community Center for organized sports. Residents with children can hang out on the playground or head to the Fountain City Art Center for pottery courses. Nearby is the Fountain City Branch Library, a hotspot for bookworms.
Enroll in career-based courses at Central High
Younger children can attend Fountain City Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, before possibly advancing to Knox County Middle School, which has a C and offers a peer mentoring program. Central High School is the district’s oldest high school and offers students a rigorous course load with classes to gain skills in many careers. The school also receives a C-minus from Niche. The University of Tennessee – Knoxville is 8 miles away.
Bungalows surrounded by blooming dogwoods
Plantation Hills is the place to be for those looking for a historic home, as many of them were built before 1930. As residents explore the neighborhood, they are greeted by blooming dogwoods and the timeless allure of the homes. The linear street layout includes bungalows and Craftsman houses ranging from $250,000 to $450,000. Minimal Traditional homes and classic four squares range from $400,000 to $580,000.
Seafood with a side of kindness in Knoxville
Residents can head to Kroger when groceries and daily essentials are running low. When it comes to dining, people can start their days at Cultivate Coffee + Flowers and grab a bouquet with their latte. Litton’s Famous Restaurant is a local favorite, serving up fried fish with warm hospitality. “Twisters is an older family-owned spot known for its ice cream and burgers,” says Emily Golec, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and Knoxville native. Locals sip on cocktails and play trivia games at bars like Knox Brew Hub and Preservation Pub in downtown Knoxville, the hub for an exciting nightlife scene.
Driving to downtown Knoxville and back
McGhee Tyson Airport is used for domestic flights, just 20 miles away. Most people hop on Interstate 640 and U.S. Route 441 to reach work and downtown Knoxville, while commuters must use the Knoxville Area Transit bus system to get to their desired destinations.
