A vibrant neighborhood close to St. Louis
Just south of the city of St. Louis, between the Mississippi River to the east, and the Meramec River to the east, lies the neighborhood of Lemay. This diverse and vibrant community offers a similar feeling to life in the city, not to mention a short commute downtown, but with the added benefits of living in St. Louis County. Lemay first developed at the beginning of the 20th century, when St. Louis was experiencing rapid growth in population due to the booming clay mining and brick-firing industries, as well as increased national attention on the city after its hosting of the immensely successful 1904 World’s Fair. That legacy means a variety of homes can be found within the neighborhood, along with local staples in the form of restaurants and stores. "It's a short drive to downtown from Lemay and outside the city limits," says Steve LoPiccolo, a licensed Realtor with American Realty Group. "Anything and everything someone could want is there, from local shops to chains, and it's close to major highways."
Variety in historic home styles
One of the defining characteristics of Lemay is its varied housing options, which span from older construction to more recent builds and renovations. The most historic homes are often the simplest—look for square-shaped, flat-roofed buildings made of red bricks, some of which may very well have been fired right in St. Louis over 100 years ago. Other architectural elders include the uncomplicated and pragmatic National-style homes you’ll see around Lemay, which are also often over a century old. You’ll also find plenty of craftsman-style houses and ranches that are a bit younger, built in the mid-to-late 20th century. Alongside these, there are also plenty of newer Traditional-style houses, as well as condos and town houses. Lemay homes rarely sell for more than $350,000, and most fall between $50,000 and $150,000 for smaller square footage up to around 750 square feet. For larger square footage, from 1,500 square feet on up, prices typically start close to $200,000.

Dual school districts
The neighborhood is split between two school districts. Students can begin their educational journey in the Hancock Place School District, which serves the majority of the neighborhood. Hancock Place Elementary School hosts grades kindergarten through five, receiving a C-plus from Niche, while Hancock Place Middle School is the site of sixth through eighth grades and is also given a C-plus by Niche. Hancock High School concludes the three-school system with grades nine through 12, receiving a grade of B from Niche and ranking as one of the top five standout high schools in the state.
Proximity to the Mississippi River
To spend some time outside, head to Lemay Park in the north of the neighborhood. The park features reservable shelters for events and gatherings, a basketball court and a one-mile paved fitness course trail perfect for a walk. Visitors can also stop at the exercise stations throughout for a well-rounded workout, and there's also a playground for year-round activities as well as a spray fountain play area for warmer months. "Lemay is close to parks and walking trails," LoPiccolo says. "There's some scenic trails that overlook the Mississippi River, too."

Local eateries and grocery options
Lemay Ferry Road is the primary thoroughfare that runs through the neighborhood, which runs south toward Mehlville and North until it becomes Alabama Avenue after crossing into the city of St. Louis. Plenty of shopping and dining, in the form of small local shops and well-known chains, can be found along that street. It’s also the road many use for grocery shopping at the neighborhood’s location of the beloved local grocery chain, Schnucks. Among local favorite restaurants is Imo's Pizza, which serves up standard offerings alongside specials on an expansive menu, while other grocery needs can be found at chains like Aldi or Dierbergs.

The Gateway to the West
Though Lemay Ferry Road can take motorists all the way north into the city’s famous southside neighborhoods like Soulard, it's likely be quicker to hop on Interstate 55, which reaches downtown St. Louis in just over 15 minutes. The choice between city and county is always a tough one for prospective St. Louisans, with both offering great but different amenities and lifestyles. For Lemay residents, though, that choice doesn’t seem so big. With its history and its location, Lemay offers a unique blend of the culture and excitement of the city of St. Louis’s southside and the comforts and conveniences of south St. Louis County.
