Elmwood
Big trees surround early 20th-century homes
Mature oak trees shade Elmwood's 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s-era homes — with some rarely coming up for sale. "Many people here buy houses as an off-market transaction," Hill says. "They are passed by word of mouth, or they are friends of friends." The narrow, winding streets meander past landscaped gardens. Most residences have paved driveways, carports or back-alley sheds. Elm Creek splits the neighborhood in two. The southeastern half contains Elmwood's largest homes, reaching 5,000 square feet on half-acre lots. Architectural styles include Arts and Crafts, Midcentury Modern, American Foursquare, and Colonial and Spanish Revival. These homes range in price from $300,000 to over $600,000. Larger homes start at $725,000, with a few surpassing $1 million. The western half's minimal traditional and ranch-style homes have third acre lots and about 1,500 to 2,500 square feet of living space. Properties in this section start at $150,000 and go up to $300,000. Hill notes that the community's attachment to its historic residences remains strong, and few houses risk demolition despite their age. "We always joke that you could drag a dead whale to Abilene, put a stick in its mouth and people would probably still live in it," Hill says.7 miles from the Abilene Country Club
Oscar Rose Park is east of Elmwood and features Adventure Cove, Abilene's only water park. The green space has several baseball fields and a skate park. It is also home to the Abilene Community Theater, putting on shows since 1954. Many residents are members of the Abilene Country Club-North, located 7 miles east. Known for its bent grass greens, 36-hole courses, tennis facilities and golf tournaments, the private club is a big part of local culture. "Even though we have over 125,000 people in our city, the country club plays a major role in that small town feeling we have," says Robbie Johnson, Realtor and team lead of Epique Realty. Johnson says Elmwood is one of her favorite neighborhoods. "The country club community is close. Families become friends with each other, and we meet up for dinner and events."Abilene High School offers CTE programs
The Abilene Independent School District serves the growing number of families in Elmwood. "When we moved in, there was just one family with kids because you had a lot of older residents living here," Hill says. "But over the last 15 years, we've seen an influx in families." Bonham Elementary School earns a B from Niche, and Craig Middle School earns a B-minus. Abilene High School has a B-plus and offers the National Technical Honor Society and career and technical education courses. Abilene's second-largest college, McMurry University, is 2 miles south.Close to H-E-B and Firehouse Fitness
Elmwood is near small shopping centers and restaurants. "Krua Thai is my favorite spot. My husband and I love eating dinner there," Johnson says. On South Seventh Street, Mezamiz Coffee House is a small cafe known for lively open mic nights and lattes. "We have a few spots I can walk to in the morning, like the cafe and Firehouse Fitness," Hill says. Elmwood is seeing new commercial ventures to add more amenities closer to homes, including Salty Roan Bakehouse. "It's a chicken salad on a croissant type of spot," Hill says. "It's a locally owned bakery with incredible pastries like rosemary cheddar scones." H-E-B is on Elmwood's southeastern corridor, and Dollar General is on South Leggett Drive.5 miles from Dyess Air Force Base and Hendrick Health
Ongoing construction and road closures on Riverside Boulevard has caused daily noise and detours for locals. Elmwood is 3 miles from downtown, but locals don't need highways to get there. U.S. 84 and U.S. Route 277 run along Elmwood's western side. Within a 5-mile radius, Dyess Air Force Base and Hendrick Health are Abilene's largest employers. Abilene Regional Airport is 7 miles away and offers daily connecting flights to Dallas.Elmwood is 3 miles from Downtown Abilene
While Elmwood does not have events, residents can enjoy festivities nearby. Oscar Rose Park hosts Movies in the Park in the summer and downtown organizes ArtWalks every second Thursday throughout the year.
