Red Bud Area
Redbud Park is home to the Abilene Legacy Little League
Redbud Park's $6 million update added a STEAM-focused child education center to the YMCA of Abilene. "The YMCA is private, but it's still a good reason to visit the park. Many people sign up for their programs," says John Hill, broker and co-owner of Barnett & Hill and a longtime Abilene resident. In addition to the YMCA, Hill appreciates the park's other amenities. "Redbud Park is well-used and loved. My kids played soccer there," he says. "It's big and has a running path, which is nice because Oscar Rose Park doesn't have that." The park also features a splash pad and updated ball fields home to the Abilene Legacy Little League. "The Southern Little League and Dixie Little League merged to create this one," Fulkerson says. She also highlights the Prairie Dog Preserve as one of the most surprising parts of the park when she moved there. "They're in a cage, so you don't have to mess with them, but they burrow underground and pop back up. It's fun for the kids to watch." Nearby, Abilene Country Club was ranked as one of the top golf courses in the state by Dallas Morning News.Cooper High School offers STEM programs
The neighborhood is a part of the Abilene Independent School District. Alcorta Elementary School has a B grade from Niche, and Mann Middle School has a B-minus. Its electives include robotics, manufacturing and business management. Cooper High School gets a B-plus and provides career and technical education focusing on STEM and medical studies. "My wife graduated from Cooper. It was the rival school to Abilene High when it opened in the 1960s," Hill says. He notes that while the neighborhood lacks a distinct identity, locals often choose their homes based on their preferred school. "Many people prefer Wylie ISD these days because it is newer, but I like Abilene ISD for its AP programs."Ranch-style houses with quarter acre lots
The neighborhood is divided by Sayles Boulevard, which becomes Buffalo Gap Road further south. It features various mid to late-century subdivisions built from the 1960s to the 1990s. North of Redbud Park, Hamilton Heights includes a mix of fixer-uppers, brick ranch-style homes and traditional clapboard houses. Some residences have paved driveways or single-car garages, while others have carports. East of Buffalo Gap Road, Thornton Heights offers bungalow ranch-styles on smaller lots. Across subdivisions most houses range from1,500 to 2,000 square feet and sit on quarter-acre lots. Home prices span between $150,000 to $250,000. Annual property taxes typically are under $3,000.A mile from big box retail and small businesses
The Red Bud Area is home to Crossroads Shopping Center just south of the park. The center has Anytime Fitness and a mix of small business and chain restaurants. Next to the shopping center, Salty Roan Bakehouse hand-makes French-inspired scones, croissants and cookies. On Buffalo Gap Road, Potter's Pizza is popular with families for its indoor arcade and their pizza sauce recipe passed down through generations. The Mall of Abilene and Shops at Abilene are nearby shopping hubs across U.S. Highway 83. "Abilene has pretty much gone big box," Hill says. "The mall is still there but kind of running on fumes. But it's still functional." These retail plazas include Target, Lowe's and small businesses. Grocery stores include Market Street and Albertsons, a mile south on Buffalo Gap Road.Redbud Park hosts events in the summer
Redbud Park has Art in the Park during the summer, where families gather with picnic blankets for interactive arts and crafts workshops. The Park also hosts the Annual Autism Walk in April and the Firecracker 4 Mile in July, a neighborhood race celebrating Independence Day.8 miles to Dyess Air Force Base
Red Bud Area's location around an industrial corridor and highways makes it noisy. U.S. Highway 83 is a north and south artery on the neighborhood's southside. But highways aren't needed for the 5-mile drive downtown or the 8-mile commute to Dyess Air Force Base. The military is the city's top employer. CityLink buses are down Buffalo Gap Road and Sayles Boulevard. The Abilene Regional Airport is an 8-mile drive with daily connecting flights to Dallas. Hendrick Medical Center South is 2 miles south.
