Close to downtown and the Abilene Zoo

South East Highway 80 is a busy residential pocket of single-family homes and apartments directly south of its namesake road. The community is home to the Abilene Zoo, and kids can sign up for recreational programs at Dodge Youth Sports Center. Downtown Abilene's cultural scene is 2 miles from the west, offering museums, small businesses and events. "Abilene has changed so much. It is a great place to raise a family and is growing. We are seeing many fun restaurants and bars downtown," says Marysa Travieso, Sports Operations and Social Media Coordinator for AYSA.

Youth activities offered at Dodge Youth Sports Center

Families spend free days at Grover Nelson Park, home to the Abilene Zoo, one of the city's biggest attractions. With over 600 animals and interactive exhibits, many residents get season passes. The park is a recreation hub offering several baseball fields, but the most popular attraction is the Nelson Splash Pad. Next door to the park, the lesser known but just as big Dodge Youth Sports Center is operated by the Abilene Youth Sports Authority (AYSA), offering low-cost sports leagues and camps. "We are a non-profit organization that was formed in 2004. We opened our facility in 2020. It was all privately funded by community members," Travieso says. "In our fourth year, we have seen steady growth and a rising need for an outdoor facility. We are expanding by adding ten outdoor fields and are excited to add soccer, football, and other programs in 2025."

Pockets of midcentury homes and apartments

Subdivisions like Canterbury Trails and East Horizon define the area. The community features mid-century ranch-style and minimal traditional homes, with paved driveways often occupied by pickup trucks and sedans. Streets are broad but can lack sidewalks, and backyards are spacious, enclosed by wooden fences and shaded by low trees. Home prices range from $150,000 for older houses to $225,000 for remodeled properties. Apartment complexes and railroad tracks near East Highway 80 contribute to occasional noise. The neighborhood is in a flood zone due to its proximity to Lytle Lake and Cedar Creek, resulting in higher home insurance costs.

Living next to growing and artsy downtown Abilene

Live music is every weekend at Sharon Riley's Lytle Land & Cattle Company, a generational family-owned restaurant. "We have local musicians from all over Texas and as far as Lubbock and DFW," Hoetger says. cowboy hats hanging from rustic wood and corrugated tin walls give this local spot a homey feeling. "We have the only mesquite grill in Abilene. It's a type of wood that gives our steaks a smokey flavor. It's the centerpiece of our restaurant." Downtown Abilene is just 2 miles northwest, offering more culture and a growing dining scene. "Downtown is known as the storybook capital of the world. All of our streets have two names—the actual name and a storybook name," Hoetger says. United Supermarkets is 2 miles north of University Hills Shopping Center, and Circle H Meat Market & Mercantile on East South 11th Street is a locally owned butcher stocked with local goods.
