Westwood Richland
Midcentury ranch homes near two elementary schools
Westwood Richland comprises several subdivisions, including Richland Acres, Green Acres, Woodlawn and Park Plaza. These subdivisions offer a mix of properties on big corner lots with ample backyard space. “It’s a solid older neighborhood, but the homes here are smaller than you’d find in Elmwood,” Smith says. “There are plenty of rentals, but if you’re hunting for a fixer-upper, this is a spot worth checking out.” Most homes are around 1,4000 square feet and date back to the 1950s and ’60s. The neighborhood mainly has brick ranch-style homes and minimal traditional houses. They come with either double-car garages, long paved driveways or carports. Elm Creek winds through the neighborhood, and since it sits in Abilene’s floodplain, heavy rains can occasionally make the creek spill over. However, in Abilene’s generally dry climate, flooding is a rare concern. “With flooding in Abilene, some homes in the flood zone have never seen a drop, while others have. It’s a bit of a gamble," says Sylvia McMillan, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Apex and longtime Abilene resident. Homes here typically go for between $145,000 and $300,000.Three miles from downtown Abilene
The neighborhood features two small shopping centers with local businesses and chain restaurants. On North Clack Street, Belle's Chicken Dinner House is an unassuming wooden shack open Thursday through Sunday. It has a homey feel with country music and playful movie character cutouts inviting guests to "head to the dark side and try a thigh." On South First Street, Szechuan serves authentic Chinese cuisine, welcomed by a stone koi fishpond outside. United Supermarkets is on North Willis Street, and La Mexicana Meat Market is a well-stocked butcher shop and grocery store nearby. Downtown Abilene is just 3 miles southwest, offering locally owned businesses, museums, and the historic Paramount Theater.Abilene High School offers STEM programs
The Abilene Independent School District is the largest in town, serving just over 15,000 students. Stafford Elementary, Purcell Elementary and Mann Middle School have B-minus ratings from Niche. Abilene High School has a B-plus rating and offers career and technical education courses in cybersecurity, engineering and health sciences. McMillian highlights the importance of recreational activities for students in Abilene ISD: "In West Texas, high school football and basketball are everything. Most kids participate in something."Adventure Cove is Abilene’s only water park
The neighborhood's sole green space is Coach James Valentine Park, next to Stafford Elementary School. Though it only features a small playground, it was renamed in 2022 to honor a local community member. Two miles south, Oscar Rose Park is a go-to recreational hub for families. This park is home to Abilene’s only water park, Adventure Cove, with water slides and a lazy river. McMillan says The Rose Park Senior Activity Center also plays a major role in the community, hosting $2 lunch days for seniors. She also highlights the Abilene Community Theater, a beloved fixture at the park for generations.Outlaws and Legends is a popular music festival each March
Five miles north, Back Porch of Texas is a popular event venue hosting one of Abilene’s most loved events. Outlaws and Legends is a real honkey tonk where locals come out in cowboy boots, hats and jeans to rock out to country music. “It’s a big music festival that takes up the whole weekend,” Smith says. “They allow a couple of hundred RVs, and people come on Thursday and stay the whole weekend.”Only 8 miles from Dyess Air Force Base
Abilene is car-dependent, and highways aren’t needed to get to most places in town. U.S. Highway 84 on the neighborhood's western boundary, leading north to Lubbock. Daily noise is common with railroad tracks in the neighborhood’s southern end between North and South 1st streets. CityLink bus stops are accessible throughout the neighborhood. Abilene’s biggest employers include Hendrick Health and Dyess Air Force Base, which are within a 10-mile radius. The same distance is Abilene Regional Airport, offering six daily connecting flights to Dallas.
