Diverse architecture lining Rochester streets
Rochester’s housing varies widely in terms of both architecture and pricing. Homes in need of renovations typically cost $200,000 or below, but the neighborhood is also a prime spot for those looking for a respite from city life. “It’s a huge percentage of second homes,” Brenn-White says. Ranch-style homes, split-levels and Craftsman designs often fall between $200,000 and $500,000, and prices are also often dependent on the accompanying acreage and location in relation to the surrounding wilderness. “Second homes probably start around $500,000 and go up to $3 million or something like that,” Brenn-White says. “That’s where you’d get a little bit of land and some character, and new builds are $1 million and up.” Larger farmhouses, rustic cabins, A-frames and modern designs are all among the second-home varieties in Rochester.Sprawling preserves at either end of Rochester
The Sundown Wild Forest occupies much of western Rochester, spanning more than 30,000 acres overall. Visitors hike, fish, camp and more on its grounds and trails, and snowmobiles take to its grounds during winter. Vernooy Kill Falls, within the forest, is a popular spot for swimming. “You can hike to it, and it’s beautiful,” Brenn-White says. “The waterfall comes down and there’s flat areas. Each of those flat areas are like swimming holes, which is cool – you can swim around in a waterfall, which is awesome.”In Rochester’s southeastern corner, parts of the sprawling Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Mohonk Preserve offer more recreational spaces. “Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve are huge for hiking and rock climbing,” Brenn-White says. Gertrude’s Nose sits in the same area, an almost-sheer, rocky cliff that looks out over Lake Minnewaska.
Schools situated outside Rochester
Students can head into Kerhonkson for education at Kerhonkson Elementary School, which receives a C-plus and spans kindergarten through third grade. Rondout Valley Intermediate School serves grades four through six and is rated a C, while Rondout Valley Junior High School garners a C-plus. Rondout Valley High School also scores a C-plus, and its field hockey team won a Mid-Hudson Athletic League championship in 2023.Locally-owned orchards alongside resorts
One of the region’s defining features is INNESS, a luxury resort with numerous amenities in Accord but central to Rochester. “It’s a very cool, Scandinavian, minimalist hotel and apartments,” Brenn-White says. “It has a really fantastic restaurant with views of the Catskills and a membership club. You can join, do classes, go to their pool and there’s also golf and tennis. They’re about to open a spa.” Westwind Orchard is a popular cider bar, and local agrarian outlets like Wightman Fruit Farm are also mainstays. “Westwind is this beautiful, Italian-owned orchard that was brought back to life,” Brenn-White says. “They make cider with the apples from there, and have a beautiful outdoor space.”Westwind is just across from Arrowood Farms, which hosts concerts, and Saunderskill Farms is also in the area and has been in the same family for nearly a dozen generations. Visitors to Bradford Graves Sculpture Park wander amongst art installations, or visit the Catskill Native Nursery to add plants to their garden. In northern Rochester, engines of late models, modifieds and other racing series roar at Accord Speedway, which hosts multiple weekly events through most of the year.
Thoroughfares passing through the neighborhood
Route 209 runs through the middle of Rochester, also passing through Accord and Kerhonkson in the area and eventually making a stop in Kingston. “209 is the main road, basically from Stone Ridge and High Falls to Ellenville,” Brenn-White says. “Ellenville is just south of Kerhonkson and it’s becoming a lot more popular. You can drive over the mountains and go to New Paltz or Gardiner.” Kingston itself and access to the New York State Thruway are about 20 miles northeast, while Albany sits just over 70 miles north and New York City is about 100 miles south. Route 44 also passes through parts of southern Rochester, stretching east and passing through Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.Regional markets and shops offer unique goods
Along Route 209, the Stone House Tavern hosts trivia nights and live music in a building that’s been the site of multiple restaurants over the years. Troy’s Deli & Pizzeria opens at 7 a.m. every single day and even offers delivery, while the Accord Market is convenient to Rochester and just off Route 209. “It’s actually pretty decently big,” Brenn-White says. “It has a lot of local and specialty things – you can get fancy coffee and also toilet paper. It’s pretty great.”Other restaurants, like Helena Specialty Pierogies, sit along Route 209 as it passes through Accord and Kerhonkson. Local shops are dotted throughout the area as well, including Heart & Arrow Handcrafted’s homemade items. Adirondack Music, Sporting Goods and Gifts stocks a selection of instruments, accessories, fishing supplies and more. For groceries, a ShopRite sits 12 miles southwest in Ellenville.
