Scenic vistas in upstate New York
Marbletown surrounds the hamlet of Stone Ridge in upstate New York, just south of the Ashokan Reservoir near the Catskills. English settlers first came to the area in the late 1600s, and well-preserved homes and churches from the late 1700s and 1800s still rest in Marbletown’s historic districts. Today, the community’s outdoorsy ambiance is one of the area’s primary attractions, bringing residents to hike trails, take in vistas and even buy second homes. "It has scenic landscapes and mountain views, and that pretty much stands for all those areas,” says Karina Galeano, a real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Hudson Valley North. “Everywhere you turn, it's something beautiful: a trail, a river, a mountain. It's chock-full of activities like mountain climbing and mountain biking. There's a ton of stuff to do out there."
Agriculture is another outdoor pastime of Marbletown locals, and large swaths of its east side consist of sprawling farmland. “You’ll see a lot of people coming in to learn how to farm, grow flowers and who really want to get their hands in agriculture,” Galeano says. “There’s a big boom with that.” From farming itself to farm venues that host events, the agrarian landscape is one of Marbletown’s biggest draws.
Getting outdoors on dry land or on the water
Marbletown Town Park sits near the center of the neighborhood. Sports facilities for baseball, basketball and volleyball are all on its grounds, as well as a picnic area and rentable pavilion. In the northern half of the neighborhood, trout is a common catch in Esopus Creek, which also accommodates small craft like inner tubes, canoes and kayaks. Southeast Marbletown is marked by parts of Rondout Creek, which is also frequented by anglers and small boats.
A small portion of the Ashokan Reservoir bleeds into the northernmost part of Marbletown, and the immense body of water is popular for recreation. Swimming isn’t allowed there, since it supplies water to New York City. However, fishing and non-gas-powered or non-motorized boats are permitted. Areas around the reservoir are also lined with trails. “The recreation is a huge draw,” Galeano says. “You have a lot of city people that come up to get away from that very environment, so they seek the bike trails, rail trails, hiking and all that outdoor activity that they just don’t have at their fingertips.”
