Generational roots and Ohio Northern University bring people to Ada
Ada is an agricultural village of 5,000 people in Hardin County, about 20 minutes west of Lima. The small community is home to Ohio Northern University and Wilson Sporting Goods, the manufacturer of the official football of the NFL. A connected community draws buyers to the area — and, locals say, helps keep them there. “The folks grow up, graduate high school, and they may go to college or see what life’s about in the big city. But then when they start their families, they want to move back because they have that family support,” says local Realtor Rhonda Crouse with Realitstar. “My son could ride his bike down the street and stay out all day at the swimming pool and I felt safe. It’s very family oriented, and people rally around each other.”

Ohio Northern University is a private university with five colleges and roughly 3,000 students. “It’s a top college and, in my opinion, better than Ohio State University,” Crouse says, emphasizing its law, pharmacy and engineering programs. The expansive campus also features a stadium and ball fields. Before college, local students head to Ada Exempted Village Public Schools, which receives an overall B grade from Niche. The high school offers more than a dozen career pathways, plus job training at Apollo Career Center, which offers 35 programs and the opportunity to earn college credit.

Homes range from early 1900s styles to new builds
Ada’s housing stock mostly consists of homes built between the early 1900s and the 1950s, with a healthy collection of Victorian, National, American Foursquare, Craftsman-style and ranch-style houses. At the same time, there is new construction throughout town and new housing additions. Older homes are more likely to have driveways, detached garages and street parking, but buyers can also find attached one- and two-car garages. The median price of a single-family home is about $250,000, on par with the Bluffton median and higher than the Lima median of roughly $175,000.

ONU’s Freed Center highlights student talent and brings entertainment to the university and the public, while the Art Deco-style Ada Theatre shows first-run flicks at an affordable cost. Football fans can tour the Wilson Sporting Goods facility, where more than 500,000 NFL leather footballs are produced by hand every year. Festivals celebrate farming and football
The Farmers and Merchants Picnic has been an Ada tradition for more than 100 years. The daylong festival celebrates area agricultural producers and local businesses. “My son would count down the days to the Farmers and Merchants Picnic and stay the whole day there,” Crouse says. The Harvest and Herb Festival has Ada’s largest parade and brings more than 100 food and retail vendors to Main Street. One of the village’s newest events is the Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival, a late summer celebration that recognizes Wilson Sporting Goods for its role in the community with a live football-making experience, live music and family friendly activities.
