Rural, small-town neighborhood less than an our from the Music City

If the thought of living in a place where the night sky is filled with stars and you drift to sleep hearing the distant hoot of an owl seems appealing, it might be time to look at Adams. This rural area sits amid the rolling green hills of Middle Tennessee. It is bordered by Kentucky to the north and Interstate 24 skirts the south end. “One of the biggest appeals of Adams is that it’s so close to the city but residents don’t have to pay city taxes,” says Sharon Burrage of Agape Realty and Management. It’s a welcoming sort of place with friendly residents and lots of outdoor activities and history. The area was first settled in the late 18th century. It continued to experience growth as a stop on the Edgefield and Kentucky Railroad. The town saw a heavy fighting during the Civil War and many of the earliest homes and buildings were destroyed. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were several stores and even a flour mill in the little hamlet. When the interstate highways arrived, the flow of automobile traffic into Adams dried up and the little town went into decline. Today the area is undergoing growth as prospective homebuyers come to appreciate enjoying a bucolic lifestyle so close to a large city.

From brick ranches to modern farmhouses

Home prices start around $250,000 for a 3-bedroom brick ranch on 1.6 acres to around $730,000 for a modern farmhouse on 6 acres. Older homes in the area are generally ranch-styles and farmhouses. Newer homes include Craftsman and modern colonials. Most homes in Adams sit along winding country lanes with large yards or farms. Other than a few blocks in the town center, there are no sidewalks.

Explore the 30 acres of Port Royal State Park

For Adams residents, the great outdoors is right outside their own front door. There are plenty of fishing and camping spots in the area. The nearby Port Royal State Park is 30 acres of history and hiking trails. It encompasses what was once the thriving tobacco town of Port Royal and it is located on what was once the Trail of Tears. Visitors can learn about the history on guided tours led by park rangers. A favorite summertime activity in Adams is to float down the Red River, a moderately shallow waterway with sandy shores and a rock bottom. Whether you float in a kayak, a canoe or an innertube be sure to bring a picnic basket.

Car-dependent community

Although plenty of bicyclists enjoy pedaling along the country lanes around Adams, the neighborhood is car dependent. It is 39 miles from downtown Nashville straight down Interstate 24. “It really is easy to get to Nashville and Adams sits on the outskirts of Clarksville. Because Fort Campbell is only about 30 miles away, a lot of military folks also live in Adams,” says Realtor Burrage. There is no train or bus service to Clarksville — or to Nashville — from Adams.

The Bell Witch legend

Up for a creepy and paranormal experience? Adams is home to the still-unexplained Bell Witch legend. In 1817, the Bell family moved to a farm in Adams and soon began to hear strange noises and experience physical attacks from an unseen tormentor. The events are well-documented and attributed to a witch who lived in a nearby cave. Visitors can tour the witch’s cave and the cabin where the Bell family lived.
