From ranch-style properties to Colonials: Diverse houses tucked away in nature
Adelphi’s neighborhoods are primarily filled with single-family homes, often mid-to-late 20th-century properties, ranging from smaller ranch-style dwellings to Cape Cods to larger Colonials. Split-level homes, condos and apartment complexes are also common here. Properties in Adelphi go for just upwards of $100,000 for a condo to upwards of $950,000 for a larger construction. Prices and styles here often depend on the property’s age, size and neighborhood. Homes sit on well-maintained, relatively spacious lots with mature trees lining the streets and scattered on yards, and since Adelphi is home to many green spaces, particularly on the edges of the community, many locals enjoy a quieter and seemingly remote living experience bordering forestland. Streets often spread into cul-de-sacs, and some neighborhoods feature sidewalks. Some residents don’t have garages, so many people here park on the streets.

The area around the 18th-century Adelphi Mill, the only surviving historic mill in the county and the largest in the D.C. area, offers visitors plenty to do outside. Just behind the playground, hikers and equestrians head on the Northwest Branch Trail that meanders through dense vegetation along the tributary of the Anacostia River, making it a perfect spot to skip stones or fish for rainbow trout. Archers practice their aim at the Adelphi Manor Park, also home to a baseball field and playground. Restaurants and shopping centers like the Adelphi Plaza and the newly renovated Mall at Prince George’s sit along Maryland Route 193, which runs through the southern end of Adelphi, making shopping trips to restaurants and stores like Mega Mart easily accessible to Adelphi residents. Prince George County Public School District and the University of Maryland
Many students in Adelphi enroll in private schools, but they can also enroll in the Prince George's County Public School District, one of the country’s largest schools, with over 100,000 students. Some students are zoned for Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Elementary, which boasts a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1; Hyattsville Middle, which features creative and performing arts opportunities; and High Point High, which features career education programs in fields like engineering, tourism and homeland security. All three schools received C-minus ratings from Niche. Adelphi locals can further their education at the University of Maryland, which is just around 1.5 miles east of Adelphi. It was tied as the 46th-best U.S. university by U.S. News & World Report.

Adelphi is a car-dependent area, but locals have easy access to the area’s many bus stops, often near the community’s borders and Metro stations, some of which, like the College Park-U of MD Metrorail Station, are just around 3.5 miles away. Major employers in the area include the nearby University of Maryland and Adelphi’s U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Adelphi is also home to medical facilities like Mary’s Center, and a nearby hospital is the Holy Cross Hospital, which is around 6 miles away via Interstate 495. Locals here enjoy easy access to the Capital Beltway, making other areas of Maryland, Virginia and D.C. accessible.
