Rural living with a touch of Hollywood
With iconic California hallmarks like natural formations, movie ranches, wineries and outdoor recreational opportunities, Agua Dulce is a unique place to live with an ambiance all its own. From the Vasquez Rocks to the Pacific Crest Trail, the neighborhood offers residents natural beauty with a hint of Hollywood flavor. “Agua Dulce is a rural, small town,” says Debbie Kelly, a real estate broker and owner with Re/Max who specializes in ranch and rural properties. “It’s got lots of horse properties and acreage. It’s a great location with a rural atmosphere, and not too far from Santa Claus, Palmdale and Lancaster.”

Homes dotted throughout Agua Dulce
Homes are scattered throughout Agua Dulce rather than confined to subdivisions, offering residents breathing room around the homestead and with many properties multiple acres in size. Styles here include mid-century ranches, modern multi-level homes and larger estates, with the added acreage meaning the prices range slightly higher than its neighboring areas. Some properties even offer views of the Soledad Canyon desert, the Sierra Pelona Ridge or the San Gabriel Mountains, and some even all three. “Prices are all over the place, depending on how much land there is and what amenities are on the property,” Kelly says. Typically, homes start around $700,000 and stretch beyond $1 million, in rare cases dropping close to or below $500,000.

Iconic movie locations doubling as outdoor opportunities
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center is the defining recreational area for Agua Dulce, situated near the center of the region. Its primary fame is derived from its use as a filming location on many Hollywood productions, the rocks jutting skyward most notably making appearances in several episodes of the original Star Trek series. Others have included Blazing Saddles, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, MacGyver and The A-Team. Outdoor enthusiasts can also head beyond Agua Dulce to areas like Texas Canyon for climbing, numerous trails dirt roads for mountain biking and several stables for horseback riding. The Pacific Crest Trail winds into the Pelona Mountains, running as far north as Canada up the coast.

Stores in and close to Agua Dulce
Though stores in the downtown area are scarce, a small hardware store and a few beloved restaurants do make their names known. Live country music and local food can be found at Sweetwater Bar and Grille, or residents can grab a bite to eat at Le Chene French Cuisine, which operates in the same building made iconic by Steven Spielberg’s 1971 debut film Duel. For more general needs, a couple convenience stores and single gas station are in the neighborhood, but supermarkets can be found in Acton, about 10-15 minutes away, or Santa Clarita, about a 15-20 minute drive.

Horses, wine and Old West vibes
Wineries are one of the most popular features of the area, with both Reyes Winery and Agua Dulce Winery minutes away from each other on the Sierra Highway. “They have events here, too,” Kelly says. “There’s a Fourth of July parade down Main Street, and the Pacific Crest Trail Days happen every year. People hike that trail and come through town around that time.” Cooper Horse Riding Ranch spans nine acres for its equestrian patrons, while the nonprofit Carousel Ranch provides children with special needs with horseback riding opportunities. Circle G Movie Ranch is a trip back in time with an Old West saloon, prison, mine entrance, general store and more, offering an hourly rate and add-ons for those seeking to book the location.

Getting around southern California
The Sierra Highway slices through the center of Agua Dulce and cuts the neighborhood in two, eventually merging with Route 14 in Acton. “It’s very accessible to Route 14,” Kelly says. “It’s an hour or an hour and a half to Los Angeles, and it’s not too far out of town or from hospitals or grocery stores. There’s also a private airport.” Route 14 also has a portion of its road in the neighborhood and runs along the southeastern-facing boundary and runs east to Palmdale.
