Ahoskie has small town living close to shops and restaurants

Surrounded by farms and woodlands, Ahoskie offers small-town vibes with access to shopping hubs, local restaurants and outdoor attractions. Part of Hertford County, farming dominates the region as its major industry. The town is small, but compact, allowing for quick trips to shops and parks. Nearby railroad construction and the opening of the town’s Post Office in the late-1800s resulted in some residential growth in the 1900s. While communities closer to the coast like Currituck County are seeing rapid growth as Hampton Roads and the Outer Banks become more populated, Hertford County is still maintaining its rural identity.

Traditional homes starting in the $75,000s

Homebuyers can find colonials and Cape Cods from as early as the 1930s, as well as ranch-style houses from later in the century. Properties are compactly placed along gridded streets with some front and backyard green space. Nearly every home has a driveway, and larger houses also have attached garages. Properties typically sell for $75,000 to $350,000.

CTE programs at Hertford County High

Students may start at Bearfield Primary School, which receives a C from Niche, for kindergarten through third grade, before going to Ahoskie Elementary, which gets a C-minus, for fourth and fifth grade. Hertford County Middle has a C-minus, while Hertford County High also earns a C-minus and offers additional career and technical education programs.

Route 13 connects to Windsor, Suffolk

Commuters can take U.S. Route 13 south 22 miles to Windsor and north 40 miles to Suffolk. The Chowan Hospital is in town along Route 13. The closest major airport, Norfolk International, is 75 miles away.

Recreation complex, local theater

The Ahoskie Creek Recreational Complex is the largest park in town, offering baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a volleyball court, playground and a fitness trail. The Gallery Theatre is an indoor venue that’s hosted local productions since it was founded in 1970. The Beechwood Country Club is 7 miles away with a public, 9-hole golf course. Residents can also boat and fish in the nearby Albemarle Sound, as well as drive 80 miles to Virginia Beach or 100 miles to the Outer Banks for sandy beaches.

Shopping and dining along Route 13

Along Route 13, there are chains like Walmart and Food Lion for essentials. Shopping centers hold additional stores like Harbor Freight and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. There are also locally owned restaurants like The Table Spoon for breakfast and lunch and Los Amigos for authentic Mexican dishes.

Ahoskie Soul Food Festival

In June, the Ahoskie Soul Food Festival offers live music, local eats and friendly competitions. There are more events throughout Hertford County, including Winton’s Halloween Fall Festival in October.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
