Several miles east of Orlando’s bustling downtown the Alafaya neighborhood of Eastwood has become known as a place to settle down when looking for an area with good schools. “[They] are a big draw for almost this entire zip code,” says Sean Burke, Realtor at Young Real Estate. “If you’re zone for Timber Creek High School, that’s where a lot of people want their kids to go. It’s a very STEM-based school, and it works because there’s a lot of STEM based employers nearby.” The neighborhood has suffered from the closing of the Eastwood Golf Club, Burke says. “But it’s still a great area. My kids ride their bikes to their grandparents’ house, and I don’t sweat it, because it’s 25 miles per hour and it’s a great little neighborhood.”
Eastwood is a vibrant, family-friendly community offering resort-style amenities only miles east of downtown Orlando.

Varied houses, gated community within
Homes in Eastwood were built between 1990 and 2002. Contemporary ranch and two-story homes are the dominant architectural styles, with some having Mediterranean-inspired accents like red tile roofs. Most homes have prominent front-facing two- and three-car garages. Driveways are concrete or brick, and many lead to tall arched entryways. The easternmost section of the community is known as The Preserve at Eastwood, with a single gated entry point and 24-hour security. Sidewalks are narrow but even, and individual owners carefully maintain their lawns. Several homes have covered pool areas. Manmade lakes give some properties waterfront views. Eastwood homes are on the market for $400,000-$725,000. HOA fees run $130-$320 monthly.

Sunrise Elementary, built for Eastwood
Eastwood is part of the Orange County Public School System, which participates in the school choice program. Children in the area can attend Sunrise Elementary School, which Burke says was built for the neighborhood. It earns an A grade on Niche. Discovery Middle School for Grades 6 through 8 has a B-plus grade. Timber Creek High School has a grade of A-plus. Timber Creek offers a course in vet assisting, where students work with animals and learn the practice of veterinary medicine. Growing Together Academy is a nearby Christian private school for kindergarten through ninth grade.

The Shoppes of Eastwood at the southwest corner of the neighborhood features a Publix as its anchor. Wine 4 Oysters Bar & Bites is the place for an oyster connoisseur, as the restaurant boasts over a dozen preparations of oysters and other seafood. Chimiking Restaurant is a small local chain selling Latin American fare, focusing on Puerto Rican and Dominican classics. Locals can get a taste of Venezuelan flavors at Arepa Burger just north of the neighborhood. At the center of the neighborhood is Freedom Park, a residents-only space with a pavilion, basketball courts, a playground, and soccer and baseball fields. Westgate Park on the west side of the neighborhood, also restricted to residents, has the same amenities, but with more sports courts and another pavilion. The community cabana offers a pool and community room for residents. The attractions at Disney World are about 30 miles away.
