There are some streets that are pretty nice for first-time homebuyers.” While Jackson Heights is largely residential, it also includes mom-and-pop eateries and Robert H. Harvey Elementary School.

Ronnie’s Rib & Chicken Shack has such a devoted following of regular customers that owner Ronnie Bailey knows what they’re going to order when they walk in the door. He’s returned that community support with events like free food giveaways on the Fourth of July. “There are a lot of chain restaurants, 2 or 3 miles south on Oglethorpe Boulevard," Jones says. “A Maryland Fried Chicken just got built into the Valero gas station that’s really close by on the east side.” For produce and meat at a discount, there’s Rubo’s market, while a Walmart Supercenter is 3 miles east on Cordele Road.

Jogging and basketball at C.W. Heath Park
C.W. Heath Park butts up against the neighborhood’s northeastern edge, offering a playground, basketball courts and a walking track. Downtown's Riverfront Park has a splash pad and bike paths along the Flint River that lead to a life-sized statue of Albany native Ray Charles that plays music and lights up at night.

Harvest Kingdom Jubilee Ministries on Swift Street serves as more than a place of worship in the community. Downtown, Fridays on the Flint is a free music concert series on the first Friday of every month from May through November at the Veterans Park Amphitheatre. Jones says All American Fun Park is another popular destination for entertainment. “It has an arcade, go-kart tracks and mini golf,” he says. “It’s only like five or 10 minutes away. You can pretty much get anywhere in Albany in 10 to 15 minutes. That’s one of the nice things about living there.”

Fridays on the Flint is a local favorite event at the Veterans Park Amphitheater.
