Urban Beverwyck is close to schools and Downtown amenities

Beverwyck, 2 miles from Downtown Albany, is known for its walkability to schools and access to Downtown and big-city convenience. The area features a mix of single- and multifamily homes, many dating back to the 1920s. Residents enjoy easy access to schools, parks and a range of dining choices along Central Avenue and in the heart of Albany. With nearby bus stops and access to major roadways, Beverwyck combines urban amenities with a residential atmosphere.

Classical single and multifamily homes

Beverwyck is mainly residential, with a collection of homes mostly built in the 1920s. “I would say it’s a mixture of families and renters,” says Nicole Wilkie, an associate broker with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and head of the Red Dog Team. Wilkie has been working in the industry for 12 years. “There are sometimes student rentals because it's close to campuses and schools. Overall, I think people seek this area out because it's close to parks and has walkability. It’s near the city bus line and major roadways that lead to highways.” This area is mainly renters, with less than 20% owning property. Home styles are primarily single and multifamilies with apartments and townhouses available as well. “They’re older homes, some are historical, some are just really old, and the architecture is beautiful,” says Wilkie. There’s a mix of housing styles, primarily classic styles such as Colonial Revival and Dutch Colonial Revival, as well as bungalows and Foursquares, with many homes featuring Victorian additions. They range from the lower $100,000s to the mid $300,000s. The median sale price is $202,500, which is lower than Albany's median as well as neighboring areas such as Pine Hills, Upper Washington Avenue and West Hill.

Bus stops, major roadways and walkability in Beverwyck

“The area is centrally located, so it's just a short drive or walk to hospitals,” says Wilkie. “Very convenient, and the schools are right there, the high school and the colleges, shopping malls, eateries, Downtown just a few minutes away. It's kind of the best of both worlds because you're outside of the Downtown area, but you can still get there and enjoy what the city offers.” Beverwyck is a walkable area with sidewalks lining most streets and bus stops along Washington Avenue and North Main Avenue. Taking the bus Downtown usually takes less than 20 minutes. Those who drive may hop onto Central Avenue or Madison Avenue to reach the rest of the Capital District. “Most homes have street parking,” says Wilkie. “Some properties will have off-street parking.”

The highly rated City School District of Albany serves the area, and the Albany High School borders the neighborhood. “It’s sought out for its convenience,” says Wilkes. “Families like to be close to the school.” The Albany High School Abrookin Career & Technical Center is in the area and offers programs such as cosmetology, education and health sciences. The private, all-boys LaSalle School is nearby and works to educate orphaned children.

  • Bleecker Stadium, a historic multipurpose sports field
  • Swinburne Park, a shaded park with paved walking trails and a play structure
