Easy access to schools, parks, shopping and more in Beverwyck

Beverwyck is an Albany neighborhood that boasts a prime location. This enclave, though small, is in a spot that gives it big-time convenience, close to your pick of capital city amenities. “It’s located close to the bus stops, public parks, schools and shopping centers,” says local Realtor Regina Gilder of Keller Williams Capital District. Beverwyck, just about 2 miles from Albany’s downtown, is the type of place that truly positions all you want and need right at your fingertips. You can quickly access so much here, right outside your door.

Early 20th century homes with charming architecture

Beverwyck was actually the original name of this whole area before it was renamed Albany in 1664. What’s now the neighborhood of Beverwyck is largely residential, made up of a collection of homes that were mostly built in the 1920s. The inventory here features a blend of single- and multifamily options. Beverwyck’s houses have colonial and Victorian architectural elements for the most part.

These homes feature square footages of anywhere from about 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. Many of the houses in Beverwyck come with a small bit of yard space, on lots of at least about 2,600 square feet. Sidewalks on every block add to the convenience. “It’s just walking distance to everything,” Gilder says. You don’t really have to have a car.” Price tags here are usually $250,000 and up, Gilder says. Homes here tend to sell quickly, too, depending on the price and condition.

City School District receives high marks from Niche

Beverwyck sits in the orbit of a variety of schools, public, charter and private. Kids in this neighborhood entering the public schools of the City School District of Albany can start at Pine Hills Elementary School for prekindergarten to fifth grade, which puts an emphasis on equipping students with leadership and life skills. From Pine Hills, students can move on to William S. Hackett Middle for Grades 6 to 8. The teachers at Hackett Middle boast a B+ rating on Niche and the student-teacher ratios are just 9-to-1. Students can then work toward their diplomas at Albany High while exploring a possible career path through one of the four, targeted academies offered here.

Trails, picnics and Tivoli Lake

Residents here can enjoy some fresh air at the neighborhood’s Beverwyck Park, which features plenty of open field space perfect for a game of fetch with your dog or a nice afternoon picnic. You can quickly reach the 80-acre Tivoli Lake Preserve from Beverwyck as well. This area is full of trails to enjoy, and also includes Tivoli Lake itself, which is a fishing destination. You can go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing here in the winter, too.

Shopping and dining along Central Avenue

One of the thoroughfares you can quickly walk to is Central Avenue, a stretch packed with eateries and other businesses, both chain and locally owned. For instance, you can stop in to Albany Halal Grill for a standout gyro, or Lo Nuestro Dominican Restaurant for empanadas with a side of lemonade. Or head in the opposite direction on Central Avenue to Hannaford Plaza to pick up groceries for a homemade meal from the Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy.
