Dining along Western Avenue, shopping in Stuyvesant Plaza
Western Avenue or U.S. Route 20, which is technically called Coach Bob Ford Way where it passes the University at Albany, is a hub for shopping, dining and entertainment. Residents often start their days at Uncommon Grounds Coffee & Bagels or meet up at City Line Bar and Grill for brunch. Down the road, Across The Street Pub is a popular spot to meet up for wings, beer and weekly trivia nights, while locals looking to treat themselves to a fine dining experience often head to Black & Blue Steak and Crab. Stuyvesant Plaza offers a mix of larger retailers like Talbots and smaller local shops, including the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza. Just outside the neighborhood, Crossgates Mall provides a movie theater alongside an even wider selection of major retailers and restaurants. Grocery stores like Walmart and Hannaford are also just outside the neighborhood.Major local employers, including New York State
In addition to being the home of the University at Albany’s main campus, known as the “Uptown” campus and the SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Campus Area is home to the Albany NanoTech Complex and many state organizations. The NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, The NYS Department of Labor, The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, plus the NYS Police Academy and Forensic Investigation Center — among others — are all located here. As a result, living here provides many residents easy access to school or work. “It’s easy, you can get to work in two minutes,” Clancy says. “The State of New York is probably the biggest employer for Albany.”Older homes starting at $200,000
According to Clancy, homes in Campus Area were typically built in the 1940s and 1950s, though there are also some younger homes available. As a result, the homes here vary greatly in style. There’s a wide variety of colonial styles alongside Cape Cods, ranch-style homes, bungalows and even brick Tudor-inspired homes. These homes typically sell for between $200,000 and $300,000 range, but fixer-uppers can be found for less, and a small handful of properties break past the $300,000. Some homes have off-street parking, while others have one- or two-car garages. Compared to other Albany neighborhoods, many of which have selling prices starting at around $300,000, the area is affordable, another aspect that Clancy says draws homebuyers here. “There’s no inventory. Homes come on and sell in a week. Especially if you’re below the median price, that affordability is higher,” he says. “If you miss the first weekend a house is on the market, it’ll be gone by Monday.”Nearby kayaking at Six Mile Waterworks Park
Sunset Park is a pocket park that offers residents a playground, basketball court and small green space. Several larger parks sit just outside the neighborhood’s borders, including Buckingham Lake Park. Although it’s just 5 acres, it’s a great spot for dog walking along wooded paths and fishing. Residents enjoy ice skating in the winter months. The 57-acre Six Mile Waterworks Park is part of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and offers walking trails as well as water activities like kayaking and fishing, though there’s no swimming allowed in the lake.Catching a show at University at Albany
Guilderland Farmers Market meets every Sunday evening from July through October at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, featuring much more than fresh produce. There are local artisans and crafters, homemade beverages and food, live music, special events, competitions and more. The University at Albany Museum offers a variety of exhibitions and performances to the public throughout the year, and venturing to Downtown Albany always offers plenty of excitement, including concerts, sporting events, festivals, museum exhibits and art shows.Highways like I-87 and I-90 make traveling easy
While Campus Area is mostly car-dependent, with a few more walkable areas near the university campus, the ease of highway access via Interstate 87, Interstate 787, Interstate 90, and U.S. Route 85 makes it a great location to get virtually anywhere in the Capital District. U.S. Route 20, more commonly called Western Avenue, also runs through here and there are bus stops scattered throughout the area. Albany Medical Center, St. Peter’s Hospital and specialty medical facilities are all within 3.5 miles away. Albany International Airport is less than 7 miles away, about a 10-minute drive.Albany High’s magnet program
Niche gives the Albany City School District a C-plus rating. Local children can attend Eagle Point Elementary School, which has a B-minus, before moving on to William S. Hackett Middle School and Albany High School, which both have B ratings. Albany High makes Niche’s list of top 10 magnet high schools in New York and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Students preparing for high school can also submit an application for lottery admission to TechValley High School, a Boards of Cooperative Educational Services school on the SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s campus that doesn’t have a rating on Niche.
