Suburbia outside of Albany
Southwest of downtown Albany, the residential streets of Helderberg sprawl between two major thoroughfares and close to a pair of major parks. With New Scotland Avenue and Hackett Boulevard sandwiching the neighborhood, connectivity to downtown isn’t sacrificed for suburban serenity. “It’s just an area where people love the neighborhood,” says Lorenzo Murray, a New York State licensed associate real estate broker with HUNT Real Estate. “They love what Hackett Boulevard has to offer and really like spending a lot of time on New Scotland Road. They’re highly sought-after neighborhoods. People live there because they like what they see.” Residents can find a bevy of home varieties, most around a century old, on roads lined with sidewalks and overhead foliage.
Helderberg balances green space with a short commute to downtown Albany.
In Helderberg, residents can find some breathing room between the properties. Mostly laid out in a grid formation, homes here typically have front and rear lawns, with mature trees separating the backyards. Thanks to the layout, sidewalks neatly line the streets, and residents can park their cars along them in front of the houses. The properties here almost all date to the 1920s and 1930s and fall into a variety of styles. “There’s probably a 50-50 mix – you’re going to see a lot of single-family homes, but also a few multi-unit homes,” Murray says. “Albany is definitely a very old city. It’s a hodgepodge mix of homes.” That selection includes classic colonials alongside Craftsmans, as well as ranches and bungalows. Prices usually range from around $250,000 for small bungalows or single-family colonials to around $350,000 for larger multi-unit homes. Architectural flair in Helderberg can include protruding bay windows, covered or closed-in porches and tall, brick chimneys.

Parks with events and amenities
Just southeast of Helderberg lie the green hills of Lincoln Park. It dates all the way back to 1900, and its rolling hills encompass a large complex of facilities. Visitors can play pickup games on courts for basketball, tennis or handball; baseball or softball on several fields; or clamber on the playground or hop in the area’s only non-wading outdoor pool. The rolling landscape also makes for ideal sledding slopes in the winter. Meanwhile, Washington Park sits northeast and serves as a major recreational hub for the Albany area at large. Our main area of attraction for parks is definitely Washington Park,” Murray says. “It’s got basketball courts, tennis courts and there’s always something going on. That’s where the Tulip Festival is and where any kind of walk is going on, like sponsorship walks.”

A pair of major thoroughfares
New Scotland Avenue and Hackett Boulevard frame the neighborhood to the north and south, respectively. “New Scotland is a major thoroughfare,” Murray says. “It’ll bring you from Washington Park past the Albany Medical Center, out past St. Peter’s and then it’ll bring you to the Slingerlands, which is where the next largest shopping plaza is.” Most shopping and dining options for the area are on the northern side of the avenue, from Restaurant 605 in the northwest to Mr. Bumbles Café farther east. A deli atmosphere at Ragonese Italian Imports, or bar environments at the Tipsy Moose Tap & Tavern and Graney’s Bar & Grill, can also be found along New Scotland. Two Market 32 by Price Chopper locations are close by for groceries, as well. “Hackett Boulevard has islands in between, and a lot of people like that look of the medians, grass and greenery,” Murray says. “It’s a highly desirable neighborhood as far as where people want to go live.”

Convenience to hospitals, arenas and creative outlets
Downtown Albany is only about three miles east, and the MVP Arena is situated right within that area. It’s played host to events like concerts, college basketball tournaments, WWE and arena football, and some of its most notable performances have included sold-out Paul McCartney shows and multiple Metallica tour stops. Capital Hills at Albany spans an 18-hole course to the southwest, while the Albany Art Room promotes creativity and offers memberships and classes. “If you live in the Helderberg area, you’re extremely close to St. Peter’s, Albany Medical Center and VA Hospital,” Murray says. Essentially bookended by hospitals, the neighborhood’s trio of medical centers consist of St. Peter’s Hospital in the northwestern corner of Helderberg; Albany Medical Center and the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center at the northeastern end; and Albany Med South Clinical Campus in the southeast.
