It's about 8 miles southwest to downtown Albuquerque and the Alvarado Transportation Center. From downtown, commuters can take Rio Metro's New Mexico Rail Runner Express. Amtrak is also available. Albuquerque International Sunport is about 11 miles south of Academy Acres North.

In the southwestern part of the neighborhood, near the intersection of San Mateo Boulevard Northeast and Academy Road Northeast, there's a variety of retail. Restaurants include breakfast chain the Village Inn, Trombino's Bistro Italiano and Budai Gourmet for Taiwanese dishes.
