Living in Northeast ABQ near shopping and the interstate

Academy Acres North, in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights, is just east of Interstate 25, which provides convenient travel and commuting options. There are retail areas on either side of the highway corridor. "It's an older neighborhood known for being by the golf course," says Leigh-Jo Anzures, a qualifying broker with Syan Real Estate. Views of the Sandia Mountains are a highlight of living in the northeast.

Stores and restaurants around Academy Acres North

In the southwestern part of the neighborhood, near the intersection of San Mateo Boulevard Northeast and Academy Road Northeast, there's a variety of retail. Stores include Jackalope Albuquerque for home goods, What Goes Around consignment boutique and a Petco. Sprouts Farmers Market is here for groceries. Restaurants include breakfast chain the Village Inn, Trombino's Bistro Italiano and Budai Gourmet for Taiwanese dishes. In addition, numerous restaurants, a Whole Foods Market, a Walmart Supercenter, a Smith's supermarket and a movie theater are located in shopping centers within several miles of Academy Acres North.

Sister Cities Park, Arroyo del Oso Golf Course, Summerfest

People visit Sister Cities Park to play tennis and soccer and for the playground. The Arroyo del Oso Golf Course is southeast of the neighborhood. The facility opened in 1965 and has a driving range, a café and lessons by reservation. Adjacent to the course, Arroyo del Oso Park has a playground, sports amenities and trail access. Several miles to the north, North Domingo Baca Park is the site of The Heights Summerfest, part of the city's concert series.

The mountains are nearby, so hiking and other outdoor recreation are popular. Sandia Peak Tramway, the longest aerial tramway in the Americas, is about 8 miles away. Skiing is available seasonally from Sandia Crest.

I-25 on the west, buses on ABQ RIDE, flights from Sunport

Academy Acres North's residential streets have sidewalks, and thoroughfares like Academy Road Northeast have bike lanes. On the west side of the neighborhood, there's Interstate 25. Roads running parallel to the interstate include the Pan American Freeway, and to the north, is State Route 423, also called Paseo del Norte Boulevard Northeast.

Albuquerque's public transportation includes the free bus system, ABQ RIDE. It's about 8 miles southwest to downtown Albuquerque and the Alvarado Transportation Center. From downtown, commuters can take Rio Metro's New Mexico Rail Runner Express. Amtrak is also available. Albuquerque International Sunport is about 11 miles south of Academy Acres North.

Other options include 1980s to 1990s townhouses, some of which are in the Villa Encantada community, close to the golf course. Townhouses are typically in the mid $200,000s to mid $300,000s.
