Altura is close to interstates, UNM North Campus and commercial areas

Some benefits of living in a northeast Albuquerque area like Altura include convenient access to interstates 40 and 25. Although it's primarily residential, Altura also has shopping centers, community parks and is in proximity to the University of New Mexico North Campus. There's a variety of 20th and 21st century homes to choose from.

Midcentury Pueblo and ranch-style homes and newer Mission Revivals

Pueblo-style homes with flat roofs and stucco or adobe walls are a common housing type in Altura Park. There are also some ranch-style homes with pitched roofs. The area has a few different developments. "Altura Park is a small subdivision. The focus is really around the park," says Leigh-Jo Anzures, a qualifying broker with Syan Real Estate. "The homes in Altura Park are older. These go back to, gosh, the '50s or '60s, though there are some newer ones where people had vacant lots they built on."

One of the newer areas, the gated community Altura Village, is between I-40 and Indian School Road Northeast. Homes date to the 1990s and 2000s and have garages in front. Mission Revival architectural elements include clay roof tiles, archways and stucco finishes.

Overall, Altura homes typically list for about $280,000 to $560,000. Exceptions include custom-built homes, like one known as Saul Goodman's Villa, which is among those recognizable from the television show Better Call Saul, a spinoff of Breaking Bad. This 1970s home is 9,000 square feet and was last listed for about $1.3 million before its sale in May 2025.

Several parks close to home, including one that's hidden

Altura Park has a playground and tennis courts and is within walking distance of most homes. The Altura Park Neighborhood Association hosts various community events at the park. During the summer, there's live music and food trucks on Thursday nights. A mini Balloon Fiesta is held in September, in advance of the huge Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October. In May, the park hosts a pet fair and community social which features the Mutt Strutt, a showcase of dressed-up dogs.

McDuffie Park is commonly called Hidden Park as it is secluded, tucked between residential streets. There's no parking lot, but pathways lead into the open space shaded by old-growth trees. People visit the dog-friendly park for activities like tai chi and yoga. The McDuffie Free Little Library has books available for a relaxing read on the grass or on one of the benches. Within blocks of McDuffie, Bataan Memorial Park commemorates WWII veterans with a stone memorial and two hundred trees planted in their honor.

Several elementary schools, Jefferson Middle and Albuquerque High

Most of the area is zoned to Zia Elementary School, which earns an A-minus grade from Niche. West of Altura Park, the assigned schools are Monte Vista Elementary, which also has an A-minus and Montezuma Elementary School, which receives a C-plus. Also rated A-minus are Jefferson Middle School and Albuquerque High School. Honor societies at the high school include the National Spanish Honor Society, the International Thespian Troupe 1775 and the National Art Society. The Albuquerque Public Schools district also has a variety of application-based magnet schools.

Shopping in Altura, and more in Nob Hill, Central Avenue and downtown

The northwest part of Altura includes a shopping center where a Whole Foods Market opened in 2024. Nearby, Green Jeans Food Hall, a shipping container marketplace, is home to Santa Fe Brewing and an assortment of independently owned eateries and other businesses. Toward the southwest, Altura Shopping Center has a Smith's supermarket and several businesses, including Taj Mahal Cuisine of India.

To the south, within a couple of miles of Altura, is the trendy Nob Hill neighborhood and Central Avenue, a popular street for bars and restaurants. "If you are looking for something to do, you'd go to Central Avenue," Anzures says. Central Avenue, also part of Route 66, has small businesses galore, including numerous places to eat and La Montañita Food Co-op, which has membership options but is open to all. The retro-style Guild Cinema is the oldest movie theater in Albuquerque that's still in operation.

ABQ Ride buses, access to interstates, and 8 miles to the airport

Many streets in Altura have short blocks and some are curved, keeping traffic at bay and enhancing walkability. ABQ Ride's free buses stop on streets like Lomas and Carlisle boulevard. I-25 and I-40 meet a few miles west of Altura, and the Alvarado Transportation Center is downtown, with commuter rail available on the Rio Metro New Mexico Rail Runner Express. There's also Amtrak. Albuquerque International Sunport, the region's airport, is about 8 miles south.

Public amenities at the University of New Mexico North Campus

Altura is about 1 mile east of the University of New Mexico's North Campus. The campus has over 200 species of trees and has been designated an arboretum by the state. Amenities accessible to the public include the performing arts theater Popejoy Hall, the Johnson Center exercise and recreation facility and the North Course, a 9-hole golf course with daily tee times. Also on the campus is the University of New Mexico Hospital, which has won awards from the American Heart Association in recent years.
