Large lots surround Bellehaven Elementary in a central part of town

Bellehaven is a small neighborhood in the Northeast Heights area of Albuquerque centered around a neighborhood elementary school. It offers easy access to the center of the city via Interstate 40, major employment centers in southern Albuquerque and the Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital nearby. Well-used green spaces surround the neighborhood, while larger lots and the lack of homeowner associations give residents the freedom and space to pursue their outdoor hobbies.

Stucco and brick ranch-style homes with no HOA

Bellehaven housing largely consists of ranch-style homes with a combination of stucco and slump block or traditional brick from the 1960s, ranging from $300,000 to $500,000. Homes in the lower end of the price range may be outdated or in need of repairs, though most come on grassy lots large enough for patios, garden plots and other amenities. “There’s no homeowners association (HOA) in that area, and people really like that,” says Sahar Saidi, team lead and associate broker for NM Home Deals. “Sometimes people want to park their recreational vehicles, boats or trailers, and they have more flexibility because there’s no HOA.” Splashes of green color the neighborhood when the canopies of mature trees grow back during the spring, though most front yards are neatly xeriscaped with gravel or mulch and sidewalks are bleached by the New Mexico sun.

Access to jobs in downtown, Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia Labs

Bellehaven has convenient access to some of Albuquerque’s largest employment centers. Wyoming Boulevard stretches from north to south along the western side of the neighborhood, passing local restaurants and nearby shopping plazas. The thoroughfare runs all the way through the eastern side of the city, leading south to the Kirtland Air Force Base and the Sandia National Laboratories. Before it reaches these two regional employers, it intersects with Interstate 40, which commuters can take to downtown Albuquerque, a little over 8 miles away. A free ABQ RIDE bus stops along Wyoming Boulevard as well.

Walkable elementary school and well-rated high school

Neighborhood children can walk to Bellehaven Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche and sits at the center of the community. Afterward, they may move forward to B-rated Grant Middle School before concluding their secondary education at Sandia High School, which earns an A. The high school maintains the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, as well as an Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program. Students can participate in academic-related extracurriculars, like Model United Nations, speech and debate, mock trial and student senate, outside of the regular school day.

Playgrounds, soccer fields and neighborhood trails

The closest green space to the neighborhood is Snow Park, which has a basketball court, a soccer field and a playground. It’s also home to the Snow Park Community Center, which has before- and after-school recreation programs for local children. Farther east, a paved walking path traces the hexagonal shape of Vista Verde Park, offering views of the Sandia Mountains, which turn a deep rusty shade at sunset. To the west, Inez Park is a verdant open space with lots of leafy trees and another soccer field. “The parks are definitely very well used, especially during the spring and summer,” Saidi says. “There are playgrounds for kids and lawn chairs. Families like them, and people like to walk their pets, of course.” A trail traverses the neighborhood, eventually becoming the Embudo Trail and following the Embudo Arroyo all the way east to the Sandia Mountain foothills.

New Mexican, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines coexist

The Integrity Plaza shopping center sits along the west side of the neighborhood, where residents can enjoy a variety of cuisines. Eloy’s has served traditional New Mexican food for more than 50 years, while Café Istanbul carries Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Eastern European imported products. Shoppers can also order specialties like falafel, kebabs, dolmas, shawarma and pistachio baklava. On the northern side of the neighborhood, Garcia’s Kitchen has been providing New Mexican staples, like chicken relleno, stuffed sopapillas and carne adovada, since 1975. Its colorful interior is decorated with hot air balloons and chile peppers—two of the symbols of Albuquerque—and patrons can also purchase jarred red or green chile sauce and salsa to bring home. A Walmart Supercenter is immediately north of Bellehaven.
