Age is a key number in Broadway Central Corridor
From its 1890s Victorians to its 1920s bungalows, Broadway Central Corridor is loaded with history. Much of this Albuquerque neighborhood falls within the Huning Highlands Historic District, which was the city’s first subdivision and is on the National Register of Historic Districts. The classic homes here are a magnet for new residents. “Especially people that are coming in from the east because they’re houses that were built to look like houses from the east," says local Realtor Barbara Maddox, a New Mexico native with Albuquerque-based Maddox & Co. Realtors. “And from the West Coast," she adds. "We’ve got a lot of California bungalows. The historicalness is a draw.” Homes line walkable blocks, giving residents quick access to Central Avenue restaurants and to the popular Highland Park.

A snapshot of turn-of-the-century architecture
Every street around Broadway Central Corridor features a slightly different flavor, and no two neighboring homes are exactly the same. The district dates back to the 1880s, when the railroad arrived. Bungalows and Victorian-style houses are common, but the layouts and colors vary, creating a kaleidoscope of historic character. “They’re not building the way they did back then,” says Maddox, who lives in the area. “It’s a popular area because it's historic and older.” Homes average about 1,760 square feet and are organized snugly on lots that range from just under one-tenth to just under one-fifth of an acre. Traditional single-family homes in the community sell for $230,000 to $550,000. Condos, some built as recently as the 2000s, go for $183,000 to $345,000.
The neighborhood receives a 9 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, compared to the national average of 4. Larceny carries a 10 out of 10 score here. According to information from the February 2025 Huning Highlands meeting, most of the area’s crime focuses on the Central Avenue thoroughfare. More than a quarter of the Albuquerque Police Department’s new graduates were assigned to the force that covers this part of the city.

Open fields, playgrounds and picnic spots at historic Highland Park
Just like the houses in this area, the neighborhood’s Highland Park dates to the turn of the 20th century. The park’s sloping landscape features a good bit of open field space, a playground and picnic tables. Maddox goes to the park every day. “You run into the joggers and the walkers. It’s a great place,” Maddox says. “It’s got a nice little playground for kids. There are events that happen all the time — you go on the weekends, you see people having birthday parties and whatnot there.”

Central Avenue is the neighborhood dining hub
The stretch of Central Avenue that runs through Broadway Central Corridor is lined with several local restaurants. The Grove Cafe & Market is one of the most famous, featured on the Albuquerque-based hit show “Breaking Bad.” “Everybody knows that one,” Maddox says. In real life, The Grove is known for its breakfast sandwiches and burritos. Taco Santo is a relatively new option about a block away and has popular margaritas.
Located on Broadway Boulevard, a road that intersects with Central Avenue, The Burque Bakehouse crafts a variety of breads, pastries and more that earned it a loyal following. “People line up and go around the building almost twice on the weekends,” Maddox says. “People come from all over the city to get their baked goods." Silver Street Market is a nearby, locally owned grocery option. The almost 300-bed Lovelace Medical Center is another neighborhood amenity, with a 24-hour emergency room.
