Diners have options galore on Central Avenue
Residents are within 3 miles of Central Avenue, a roadway that’s part of Route 66 and is known for its wide variety of places to eat. Frontier is one of the landmarks close to Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo. Opened in 1971, Frontier's Southwestern fare and huge cinnamon rolls have garnered a following. “They’re to die for,” Maddox says of the cinnamon rolls. “They are definitely consistent, too. I think that’s the thing about Frontier, the food is so consistent." Greek restaurant Gyros and Italian restaurant Saggios are popular, too, and both are around the corner from Frontier. The stretch of Central Avenue that runs through the Nob Hill neighborhood, 3 miles away, is lined with clothing stores, bookstores and more.
Juicy J’s in the neighborhood is a former food truck serving smoothies, açaí bowls and sandwiches. Gibson Boulevard, a thoroughfare on the south side, offers an assortment of chains from Denny’s to Chick-fil-A. There’s also a Smith’s grocery nearby on Yale Boulevard.

Leafy Roosevelt Park is a popular place for disc golf and walks
Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo is a short drive from Roosevelt Park. Tall trees shade the 14-acre space, which features a disc golf course and a playground. “My grandson and his fiancée actually live across the street from Roosevelt Park,” Maddox says. “And they play Frisbee quite a bit. Also, it’s a great park to walk around — especially in the early morning," he says. "[People often] walk their dogs around the park.”

The neighborhood attracts students and longtime residents
Most houses in Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo were built in the mid-20th century, particularly from the 1940s to the 1960s. Many are bungalows and Pueblo-style options, and floor plans average almost 1,500 square feet. Though close to UNM and CNM, these homes don’t function as just student housing. “It’s a mix. And there’s a lot of people that have lived there for a long time,” Maddox says. “There’s multifamily properties and then there’s just [single-family homes] where the people have lived for some time. It’s affordable, so there’s a lot of people that have recently moved in and are doing some redevelopment of those properties.” Most of the neighborhood homes sell for $200,000 to $400,000.

Lowell Elementary and Albuquerque High have STEM-based activities
The city’s Albuquerque Public Schools system carries a B-plus grade on Niche. Students attend the C-minus-rated Lowell Elementary, where afterschool programs include a STEM club. Lowell is also within walking distance for some in Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo. The C-rated Wilson Middle has a performing arts program with band and orchestra classes. Albuquerque High maintains an A-minus grade, and its extracurricular activities include a STEAM club. The A-rated Albuquerque Institute for Math & Science is a charter school in the neighborhood for grades 6 through 12 and is No. 2 on Niche’s list of the state's best charter schools.
CNM has the highest undergraduate enrollment of any New Mexico school, with more than 19,000 students. The college’s Liberal Arts and Business, Hospitality and Technology programs are popular. UMN has the state’s highest total enrollment, with over 23,000 on its 800-acre Albuquerque campus. The nursing, pharmacy, fine arts and engineering programs at UNM are well-regarded. The campus also includes the 618-bed University of New Mexico Hospital.

ABQ RIDE provides transportation for free
Locals can get around campus and beyond using the city’s free ABQ RIDE bus system. The buses make several stops along University Boulevard and Yale Boulevard. Some sections of University Boulevard have bike lanes, too. Gibson Boulevard and Avenida Cesar Chavez have lanes to merge onto Interstate 25. Sante Fe, the state capital, is about 65 miles north on I-25. The Albuquerque International Sunport is 2 miles away.

Roosevelt Park hosts events from time to time. Local group ABQ Flowmies throws occasional Party in the Park gatherings there on Saturdays, featuring music and art. Route 66 Summerfest is another music-based activity that draws thousands to Central Avenue in July. Summerfest includes multiple stages, food trucks and other vendors.
Going to an Albuquerque Isotopes baseball game is another favorite way to spend time outside from March to September. The Isotopes are the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Colorado Rockies and play at Isotopes Park in Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo. “Baseball has always been big in Albuquerque,” says Maddox, an Isotopes season-ticket holder. “We’re a big baseball and basketball city.” Isotopes Park is across an intersection from The Pit, the home court for UNM’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and is across the street from University Stadium, where the school’s football team plays.
The NMAA Girls State Basketball Championship is held each year at The Pit.
On top of having sports stadiums, access to UNM and great food UNM South also has stellar views.
A sense of community pride can be felt in Clayton Heights-Lomas del Cielo.
