Foothill Estates offers suburban living near the Sandia Mountains
Foothill Estates is a suburban Albuquerque neighborhood featuring midcentury homes, quiet streets and spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains. Community parks and an elementary school are within walking distance for most residents, and nearby highways make it a prime spot for local commuters. It’s located on the southeastern outskirts of the city, about 12 miles from downtown and just a few miles from hiking trails and state parks in the Sandia foothills. “You’ve got close proximity to trails and hiking in the mountains. It’s a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts,” says Realtor Robert Faithe of Keller Williams Realty, a longtime Albuquerque resident. “It’s also conveniently located right on Tramway Boulevard and Interstate 40.”
Ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and '70s
Foothill Estates was built in the 1960s and '70s. It features a wealth of modest ranch-style homes that offer between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet of living space. These homes feature wide driveways, attached garages and spacious yards that are ideal for gardening, landscaping and backyard barbecues. The streetscape is calm and quiet, and people generally feel safe walking and biking within the neighborhood. Prices range from $260,000 to $330,000 for a single-family home. “It’s a little more affordable here than the neighborhoods closer to the mountains,” Faithe says. Several small townhome complexes are also found here, with prices ranging from $225,000 to $350,000.
Tennis courts, hiking trails and a private golf club nearby
Lauren C. Boles Park is the neighborhood’s central outdoor space. It features tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground and walking paths that wind around a large field. Skate-O-Mania, also in the neighborhood, is an old-school roller rink that’s perfect for indoor recreation. Tramway Boulevard, which runs north-to-south along the neighborhood’s eastern edge, has a popular 16-mile bike path. “You’ll see a lot of cyclists, runners and walkers using the path,” Faithe says. Hiking and sightseeing are just a short drive away in the Sandia foothills. Route 66 Open Space, the Hilldale Loop Trail and the Copper Trail are all within a 2-mile radius, ensuring residents are never far from outdoor opportunities. Avid golfers can tee up at the Canyon Club at Four Hills, a private club and golf course with sweeping views of the mountains.
Local dining and shopping with big-box stores minutes away
A handful of restaurants and shops are found in the neighborhood, including Sushi Xuan Asian Grill, a local favorite for Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisine. Several shopping plazas are located less than a mile south on Central Avenue, where residents can pick up groceries at Smith’s or Sprouts Farmers Market, or catch the latest Hollywood movie at Icon Cinemas. For everything else, it’s about 3 miles to Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Sam’s Club.
Public schools with average ratings and strong extracurriculars
Students can begin their education in the neighborhood at Apache Elementary School, which has a C rating from Niche. The next step is C-rated Kennedy Middle School, followed by B-minus-rated Manzano High School. Extracurricular activities are a big deal at the high school — it offers dozens of clubs, athletic programs, bands and choirs.
Interstate and bus stops offer easy access to the city
Foothill Estates’ southern edge is bordered by Interstate 40, a commuter highway that offers a direct connection to downtown Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico. ABQ RIDE, the city’s transit system, maintains several stops on Copper Avenue, which skirts the neighborhood’s northern edge. Albuquerque International Sunport, the city’s primary airport, is about 14 miles away. UNM Hospital is about 10 miles west.
