A suburban hamlet between two lively districts in central Albuquerque
The Central Albuquerque neighborhood of Highland Business is a quieter residential area than its name might imply. Although it is home to several small shops along a section of Historic Route 66, it is primarily thought of as quaint and decidedly midcentury. It sits between the trendy coffee houses and restaurants of Nob Hill and the bustling events center of the International District, providing residents access to much of Albuquerque’s excitement from a quiet suburban enclave. “It’s a transitional neighborhood between Nob Hill and the Fairgrounds,” says Real Estate Broker Austin Wolff of The Lovely Home Company Brokerage, who has 10 years of experience in the area. “It was mostly developed immediately post-World War II, and it’s been enduring. People don’t sell there all the time. Many residents bought their homes in the ‘50s, and they kept passing them down to their children. It’s created a solid community.”

Distinctly Southwestern-style homes on small city lots
Residential properties within Highland Business are generally concentrated north of Copper Avenue. Low, single-story Pueblo-inspired homes line the gridiron streets, their front and backyards speckled with tall drought-resistant trees and shrubs. “Most of the area is comprised of small midcentury houses on typically sized city lots,” Wolff says. “They were built in the 1940s and ‘50s, and over time, people have renovated them to give them that Southwestern adobe look.” These are flanked to the north and south by apartment complexes along the two main thoroughfares. Prices for single-family homes range from $300,000 to $500,000 depending on square footage and the status of any renovations.

Grocery stores and antique malls along major thruways
The Sprouts Farmers Market to the northeastern of the neighborhood is the primary area grocery store, although residents can also pick up fresh produce at La Montanita Food Co-op in Nob Hill. Daily household necessities can be found at the Target on Louisiana Boulevard. The community is known for its large number of second-hand stores. “There are lots of antique shops and thrift stores in the area since it’s an older part of the city,” Wolff says. “And there’s plenty of restaurants next door in Nob Hill, including one of my favorite breakfast places called The Farmacy.” Other popular options include Loyola’s Family Restaurant, a long-standing New Mexican-style diner, and the local chapter of Dion’s Pizza, Albuquerque’s favorite pizza chain.

Highland Business is framed to the south and north by thoroughfares. “The two main thruways are Central Avenue, which is part of Historic Route 66, and Lomas Boulevard, which is the northern boundary,” Wolff says. “Lomas is usually the faster option. Central has a lot more stoplights.” These two roadways provide the community’s most direct connection with both downtown Albuquerque and Interstate 40, the major east-west connector of the region. Both roads are linked to Interstate 25, which is the quickest way for locals to get to Santa Fe.
