Restaurants and retail surrounded by single-family homes and condos in Hodgin
A mix of single-family, Pueblo-style homes, condos and apartments—divided by a major commercial road—make up the Hodgin neighborhood of Albuquerque. “The biggest thing to know is that Lovelace [Women’s Hospital] is the anchor,” says Austin Wolff, a real estate agent for The Lovely Home Company. “It’s where all of the jobs are.” Residences sit close to restaurants and national retailers within the neighborhood, while both of the city’s interstates are nearby as well. Hodgin scores a CAP Index crime score of 8 out of 10—which is significantly higher than the national average of 4—though the most common crimes include burglary and motor vehicle theft.
Single-family homes in southern Hodgin and condos in the north
Single-family homes line the semi-gridded streets south of Montgomery Boulevard. “It’s an established neighborhood at a good price point if you want to live in the Northeast Heights,” says Steffan Walters, a Realtor with New Mexico Home Group. “It has entry-level price points and more affordable options.” Ranch-style houses and more compact bungalows built with stucco or vinyl in the late 1950s range from $220,000 to $365,000, coming on generous lots with room for garden plots and storage sheds. Condominiums are clustered around northwestern Hodgin, in a pocket of land created by Montgomery Boulevard and Interstate 25. Units with one to two bedrooms go from $100,000 to $150,000, while monthly homeowners association fees can run as high as $450 to cover amenities like pools, clubhouses and gated entrances.
New Mexican cuisine and big-box stores along Montgomery Boulevard
Local eateries and fast-food chains line Montgomery Boulevard, one of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares. Cocina Azul is a family-owned restaurant that specializes in New Mexican dishes, like carne adovada burritos, chile relleno and stuffed sopapillas, often presented alongside colorful, creatively garnished cocktails. Less than half a mile to the west, Fiesta’s New Mexican Restaurant serves regional fare in a more casual setting. Specialties include posole and red and green chile, as well as breakfast dishes are served all day.
Nexus Brewery & Restaurant combines soul food classics with traditional New Mexican spices, creating dishes like New Mexican hot chicken prepared with red chile—a less sweet take on Nashville’s version—and gumbo topped with fresh pico de gallo. The neighborhood Albertsons Market provides groceries, while stores like Ross Dress for Less and T. J. Maxx sit across the boulevard.
Interstate access and a convenient commute to downtown Albuquerque
The neighborhood is close to the intersection of Interstate 25 and Interstate 40; both take commuters to downtown Albuquerque—which is about 6 miles away—and both traverse the entire state. Comanche Road and Montgomery Boulevard travel east to west through both the neighborhood and the eastern side of the city, and the latter crosses the Rio Grande into western Albuquerque. Four complimentary ABQ RIDE buses stop throughout the neighborhood and pass by downtown, uptown and eastern Albuquerque.
Neighborhood green spaces with a variety of athletic courts
A number of green spaces surround Hodgin, and many are attached to local schools. Montgomery Park is east of the neighborhood with four tennis courts, two soccer fields and a shaded playground. Its dog park has designated areas for small and large breeds, while the outdoor pool features a spiral slide. Villela Park has two full basketball courts and another soccer field next to six pickleball courts. Views of the rugged Sandia Mountains loom in the background, occasionally covered with a blanket of snow during the winter months. The Paseo del Nordeste Trail traverses the neighborhood as well, running through Montgomery Park until it reaches the campus of Sandia High School. “Albuquerque has these acequias, which is a fancy word for ditches,” Wolff says. “We have a monsoon season, and water flows into those. There are bike paths along the side, and the trail system is really good. It connects throughout the city.”
Education programs and musical ensembles at Del Norte High
Children may start their educational journeys at Hodgin Elementary School, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche and stretches along the western side of the neighborhood. They may then enroll in C-rated McKinley Middle School before concluding their secondary studies at B-rated Del Norte High School. The school offers career-focused electives, like those in its Educators Rising program, as well as teacher cadet courses with dual credit opportunities. Musically inclined students may join one of four school bands, wind ensemble, chorus, guitar club or orchestra, while some may attend the school’s summer band camp. Del Norte High is also home to a program that accommodates students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
