Homes in John B Robert sit next to a desert open space with a trail
A cluster of residential streets sits immediately north of the Bear Canyon Open Space, the John B. Robert Dam and its spillway — both the namesake of the neighborhood and the setting of a pivotal scene from the "Breaking Bad" television series. “It’s a typical Northeast Heights neighborhood,” says Joe Szklarz, a broker with Q Realty® who has over 30 years of real estate experience. “A lot of people like the open space and the views, and it’s close to hiking and biking trails.” A dusty trail leads from the small, sandy desert open space into the foothills of the imposing Sandy Mountains beyond, which are carved with even more trails.
Pueblo-style homes from the 1980s at a variety of price points
Single-level, new traditional brick houses and blocky, Pueblo-style homes line the residential streets of the John B Robert neighborhood, costing between $350,000 and $500,000. These homes were largely built throughout the 1980s, though some were constructed in the 1990s and 2000s as well. Generous backyards come with paved patios, room for gardening ventures and mountain views. Larger new traditional homes with multiple levels and a blend of Pueblo and Spanish Revival architecture come in a spectrum of off-white and mellow orange stucco, echoing the rust-colored Sandia Mountains behind them. These homes were mostly built in the eastern half of the neighborhood at the end of the 1980s, fetching between $585,000 and $800,000. Luxury outdoor amenities include kitchens and bars, firepits and in-ground pools.
Sandy, high desert open space near a large grassy park
The southern half of the neighborhood is dedicated to the Bear Canyon Open Space, a sandy desert landscape smattered with colorful wildflowers. The Bear Canyon Loop trail carves through the open space and continues east into the Sandia Mountain foothills—where it connects to more trails—for over 2 miles altogether. The El Oso Grande Park Natural Area, east of the neighborhood’s open space, offers a much greener environment, and its grassy field comes equipped with two soccer nets and a playground. The park is also a designated pollinator habit, with over 90 native species introduced to attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies.
Humanities and career technical courses at Eldorado High
Local children may begin their K-12 education at S.Y. Jackson Elementary School and Eisenhower Middle School, both of which receive A-minus grades from Niche. They may then move forward to A-rated Eldorado High School, where they can choose from a wide variety of humanities courses—from film criticism and Bible literature to introduction to anthropology or philosophy. The school also offers nine career and technical education pathways, including transportation, distribution and logistics, as well as arts, audio/visual technology and communications.
Local breakfast diners and bars near several grocery stores
Following Juan Tabo Boulevard north of the neighborhood, drivers will find a shopping center with a Smith’s grocery store and a few local restaurants. Breakfast is served all day at Cinnamon Sugar & Spice Cafe—most notably, the restaurant’s signature French toast dish is made with brioche baked from scratch every morning. Horse & Angel Tavern is a neighborhood sports bar that serves casual fare, crispy appetizers and cold pours to tables lit by a green banker’s lamp. South of the neighborhood, the Flying Star Cafe serves breakfast dishes, burgers, salads and bowls made from scratch on a shaded patio, where moss scales the restaurant’s exterior walls and leaves hang over a wooden pergola. “It’s close to everyday shopping,” Szklarz says. “There are two really good grocery stores that are clean, big and offer a good variety,” he says, referring to Smith’s and Albertsons, both within 2 miles of the neighborhood.
Tramway and Juan Tabo boulevards connect to Interstate 40
The neighborhood is bordered by two of Eastern Albuquerque’s main thoroughfares. Tramway Boulevard—also known as New Mexico state Route 556—leads north to Paseo Del Norte Boulevard and south to Interstate 40, both of which traverse the entire city. Juan Tabo Boulevard leads south past several shopping centers to Interstate 40. Once drivers reach the interstate, they can commute to downtown Albuquerque, which is about 16 miles from the neighborhood. A free ABQ RIDE bus picks passengers up around the neighborhood and follows Juan Tabo Boulevard all the way to the southeast corner of the city.
