La Reina de Los Altos offers suburban living with mountain views
Views of New Mexico’s Sandia Mountains await residents of La Reina De Los Altos. Situated in northeast Albuquerque, this suburban neighborhood is close to spacious parks, shopping plazas and outdoor destinations in the city’s eastern limits. The area is family-friendly, with well-kept homes and apartment buildings, a public library, a Baptist church and a handful of local restaurants within walking distance. “It’s in a very central, high-traffic area with conveniences all around,” says Realtor Sandra Hildebrand of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, who has been working in real estate in Albuquerque since 2006. “There are a lot of local businesses and neighborhood parks around here, and it’s just a few minutes from hiking in the Sandia foothills.”
Modest homes and condo complexes with walkable streets
The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets are lined with modest ranch-style homes built between the 1960s and 1980s. “It’s an older, established area. People have renovated a lot of these homes, so you’ll find some interesting and unique properties. There are some fixer-uppers as well,” Hildebrand says. Although the lot sizes are on the smaller side, there’s still plenty of room for landscaping, small gardens and back decks and patios. Sidewalks wind through the area, offering walkability to homes, parks and nearby amenities. Some homes get peek-a-boo views of the Sandia Mountains from living room windows and backyards. Single-family home prices range from around $300,000 to $450,000. Those looking for something more affordable will find condo and apartment buildings on the eastern side of the neighborhood. Condos list for between $140,000 and $200,000.
Students attend three nearby schools with solid ratings
Students start at Mitchell Elementary School, which is less than a mile northeast of the neighborhood. Niche gives it a B-minus rating. The next step is Hoover Middle School, which gets a B-plus, followed by A-rated Eldorado High School. The high school’s graduation rate has steadily improved over the last few years, rising from 74% in 2022 to 81% in 2024.
Local restaurants and stores line Juan Tabo Boulevard
Shopping and dining options are plentiful on Juan Tabo Boulevard, which skirts the neighborhood’s eastern edge. It’s home to well-known local eateries like Royal Hyderabad, an Indian restaurant with spicy, savory and vegetarian options. Garcia’s Kitchen is a family-owned Mexican eatery where tacos and burritos are served with handmade tortillas and house-made salsas and sauces. For drinks and pub fare, O’Neill’s Irish pub is also close by. Groceries and home goods are found at Lowe’s Home Improvement and Albertsons Market. For everything else, it’s about 10 miles to walkable shopping and dining destinations in Downtown Albuquerque. “My favorite thing about the city is the food. It’s very unique to New Mexico. It’s heavily influenced by Mexico, but with Native American and Spanish flavors. There’s nothing else like it,” Hildebrand says.
Annual events celebrate spicy food, sweets and state pride
Albuquerque has a plethora of annual events held throughout the year. The National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show takes place every March, bringing out thousands of visitors who sample hot sauces, salsa and sumptuous southwestern barbecue. About a month later, sweets and caffeine headline the Southwest Chocolate & Coffee Festival. Later in the year, carnival rides, rodeos and country music draw huge crowds at the New Mexico State Fair.
Parks, trails and golf courses are just minutes from the neighborhood
While there are no parks within the neighborhood, it’s just a short walk or car ride to community parks and sprawling nature reserves east of the city. The nearest neighborhood parks are Matheson Park, Mitchell School Park and Holiday Park, giving residents several nearby options for outdoor play. Scenic overlooks are just two miles away in the Sandia foothills, where expansive hiking trails wind across the slopes, giving way to sweeping views of the city below. Bear Canyon Open Space, a 170-acre walking and hiking reserve within the city, is about 2 miles north. Locals also have easy access to several golf courses, including Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course and Tanoan Country Club, both within about 2 miles.
Easy access to downtown, hospitals and the airport
La Reina de Los Altos is situated in the city’s northeast, easily accessible to job centers and cultural destinations in the city’s downtown core. Interstate 40, a major local commuter road, is about 3 miles south of the neighborhood. Those who prefer public transportation can catch the bus on Jaun Tabo Boulevard, served by bus route 1. It’s about 15 miles to Albuquerque International Sunport, which offers flights to destinations like Los Angeles, Baltimore and Chicago. UNM Hospital, one of the area’s largest medical centers, is 11 miles away.
