Fast-casual chains line the perimeter of Matheson Park. “It’s a great location when it comes to restaurants,” Dolinski says. “There’s a bunch of stuff within walking distance.” Twisters Burgers and Burritos is a local chain that serves 12 different varieties of breakfast burritos and fresh red and green chiles. Other nearby chains include Church’s Texas Chicken, Denny’s, Subway and Einstein Bros. Bagels. A few locally owned restaurants are about a mile west of the neighborhood, such as Ruben’s Grill Mexican Restaurant & Mariscos and Mrs. Sprinkles Ice Cream Parlor. Ruben’s shares a plaza with Keller’s Farm Stores, which sells farm-raised eggs, freshly cut meats and other local items, as well as made-to-order sandwiches. A Walmart Neighborhood Market and an Albertsons Market are even closer.

Pueblo-style single-level builds, split-level houses and ranch-style homes built during the late 1950s and early 1960s make up the bulk of architecture in Matheson Park. Mature trees shade front yards and sidewalks line most of the streets in the neighborhood, which was built on a flat expanse of land in front of the towering Sandia Mountains. The neighborhood’s namesake green space stretches across more than 7 acres, including a playground, a shaded picnic area and a tree trunk that has been chiseled into a statue of a pack of wolf-like creatures howling at the moon. The nearby Ross Enchanted Park has another playground, a swing set and a soccer field. A trail that starts in the Matheson Park neighborhood and weaves through Ross Enchanted Park leads to the easternmost neighborhoods of Albuquerque, which are nestled at the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. The Matheson Park neighborhood is located between Menaul Boulevard and Candelaria Road, both of which connect the community to major shopping centers heading west. Juan Tabo Boulevard links the neighborhood to Interstate 40, which brings commuters to Downtown Albuquerque, roughly 12 miles away. ABQ RIDE bus routes stop along the neighborhood’s larger thoroughfares, traveling throughout East Albuquerque and west to downtown.
