McKinley’s primary draw is convenience

Situated between Interstate 25 and Uptown Albuquerque, McKinley is a residential neighborhood close to parks, schools and commercial districts. “The big advantage is location,” says Realtor Susan Storan with Re/Max, who has 13 years of experience selling real estate in the city. “It’s convenient to big employers, like the university, the Coronado Mall, dining and the Air Force base.” In McKinley, homebuyers find the same level of accessibility as neighborhoods like Nob Hill at a more affordable price point.

The neighborhood features single-family homes and condos

Earth-toned Pueblo Revivals and ranch-style homes line McKinley’s residential streets. Many properties have gated or fenced-in yards and driveways, typically large enough for multiple cars. “Homes here are more affordable than in the North Valley,” Storan says. “There are some condo options, though the community developed in the 1950s and 1960s and has mostly single-family homes.” Houses often go for $150,000 to $350,000, and condos sell between $180,000 and $200,000.

Recreation is available at local parks, the river and the mountains

McKinley features several parks within walking distance. Grisham Park has a playground, soccer fields and picnic tables, and Cardwell Park provides a shaded green space and benches off Comanche Road. Open fields, a playground and basketball hoops comprise Villela Park, adjacent to Ken’s Pickleball Courts. Residents can also venture west of the community to the Rio Grande or east into the mountains. “The nice thing about Albuquerque is that you’re five to 10 minutes from the Sandia Mountains, so you can be hiking with your dog in the foothills by morning,” Storan says. Sandía translates to watermelon in Spanish, and when the sun sets and casts a pink and red glow on the mountains, Storan says, “They actually look like watermelons.”

Many children begin their education at Bel-Air Elementary and McKinley Middle, both of which score C grades on Niche. Elementary-aged students can join the Play+ Program, which takes place at the McKinley Community Center on the middle school campus. The center provides before- and after-school care, learning and recreational activities throughout the school year. Del Norte High earns a B and offers an ROTC program and fine arts classes, such as band, chorus and drama. Private education is available at B-rated Evangel Christian Academy for kindergarten through 12th grade, and A-plus-rated Albuquerque Christian School for prekindergarten through eighth grade. Graduates may apply to the public University of New Mexico, home to the UNM Hospital system, about 4 miles away.

Albertsons and Whole Foods are also within 2 miles. Fast-food spots and regional chains, such as Garcia’s Kitchen for classic New Mexican dishes, are sprinkled throughout the city. Residents often head to Uptown for a date night or a meal out.
