Onate offers vintage homes in the Sandia foothills
Onate is a vintage Albuquerque neighborhood on the city's northeastern side, an area known for its greenery, parks, and mountainous trails, fostering an active lifestyle. “When [the city] was established this area, these areas, were the first places to really start getting built up,” says Valerie Almanzar, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who was born and raised in New Mexico. Onate is built along the Tramway Boulevard Northeast, connecting residents not only to Interstate 40, but also a trail they can hike up to an actual tramway that will take them to the peak of the Sandia Mountains. Toby Rich, a Realtor working for Amazing Properties with a decade of experience, describes the boulevard as a “gem” of the city for this very trail. “If you live on the east side of boulevard, the houses are much more expensive, so a lot of people like this [area] because it’s as close as you can get without spending the big bucks,” he says.
Custom-built homes in a variety of styles
Midcentury modern ranch styles with southwestern flair are common in Onate. "There's a big builder called Mossman here [from the] 1950s and '70s. They built a lot of really nice classic Albuquerque homes," Rich says. "Now, since they are older, they are being updated, and [people] are doing really nice work." Mossman built over 7,500 homes within the city's northeast side and earned a reputation for its craftsmanship. Prices range from around $308,000 to $500,000 for these vintage properties, depending on how large and renovated they are. Lots are spacious, filled with gravel or grass, and sometimes decorated with pebbles. Different varieties of trees and mountain views make for scenic walks along the sidewalks. Onate also has townhouses ranging from $285,000 to around $309,000.
Outdoor recreation in Onate ranges from parks to wilderness
Brentwood Hills Park’s open grassy areas invite picnics on a blanket, and its tennis courts bring out the players. The park has a small, colorful playground and benches under its tall trees for shade. Crestview Heights Park also offers a playground and connects to the Tramway Recreation Trail. The trail runs along the foothills of the Sandia Mountains toward the Sandia Peak Tramway, which takes the adventurous to the peak. Several pocket parks dot the surrounding area, within a few miles of Onate, and a multitude of trails just east of the boulevard leads into the Sandia Mountains for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Arroyo del Oso Park — with its sports courts, fields, playground and a 27-hole golf course nearby — is within 6 miles. ABQ BioPark and Rio Grande Nature Center State Park are less than 15 miles away.
Onate schools and how they rank
Students attend Albuquerque Public Schools. Onate Elementary School provides a first step. The school is located in the neighborhood and earns an A minus from Niche. From there, students may filter into Jackson Middle School, which scores a B rating, before heading to the A-rated Eldorado High School. The high school is ranked #17 in New Mexico by Niche and was used during the filming of both Breaking Bad and Stranger Things.
Local favorite dining options
The closest shopping and dining are within a mile and a half, concentrated mostly around Juan Tabo Boulevard Northeast. There, local can find a mix of eateries to satisfy Japanese, Mexican, Korean and burger cravings as well as a few taprooms and breweries. Retailers include Albertsons for groceries, Harbor Freight Tools and Ross Dress For Less. "You're pretty close [less than 5 miles] from the Coronado Center and the Winrock Town Center," Rich says, adding that Coronado Center is "the" mall in Albuquerque. "Winrock is getting renovations and adding massive, massive stores [as well as a] Pickleball facility, and there's a huge cinema there now."
Ways to get around the city from Onate
Bus stops through Albuquerque Ride line Menaul Boulevard Northeast and Juan Tabo Boulevard Northeast. Tramway Boulevard Northeast serves as a major north-south route, connecting commuters to Interstate 40 to the south while Menaul Boulevard Northeast flows west to Interstate 25.
