Paradise East’s cul-de-sacs are lined with xeriscaped yards full of desert-friendly shrubs and succulents, giving the neighborhood a distinctive Southwestern feel. Pueblo- and Spanish Revival-style homes built in the 1990s and 2000s are common. “Around the golf course are homes that are 30-plus years old, with styles that vary from midcentury modern, Pueblo, ranch and other custom homes,” says Sally Machacek, a lifelong Albuquerque resident and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty; these are mostly traditional ranch-styles, and many have golf course views. A three-bedroom ranch-style home starts at $280,000, while a five-bedroom Spanish Revival-style home can cost $765,000. Pueblo Revival-style townhouses built in the 1970s and ‘80s are found in the neighborhood’s south; a two-bed starts at $240,000, while a three-bed can cost $355,000.

Piedras Marcadas Canyon in the neighborhood’s south is part of the 7,200-acre Petroglyph National Monument; the canyon’s two trails go past 400 petroglyphs and scenic mountain views. Smaller pocket parks are spread throughout the neighborhood, including the 7-acre Salida del Sol Park, which has a playground, shade trees and a grassy field. North West Modular Skate Park is a popular spot for teenage skateboarders to practice new tricks. Golfers can play 18 holes at Paradise Hills Golf Course, which is working to become more environmentally friendly by xeriscaping in the roughs and transitioning to battery-powered carts.

Festivals at Balloon Fiesta Park
Some of Albuquerque’s most popular events are a 7-mile drive away at Balloon Fiesta Park. This park is named for the city’s biggest event, October's nine-day Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which attracts tens of thousands of people to watch colorful hot air balloons float through the sky. “When you arrive, you’re in the dark, because you’ve got to get up early,” Machacek says. “As the sun’s coming up, the balloons are blowing up, and all of a sudden, they’re in the air. It’s just an incredible experience.” The park hosts other annual events, including PrideFest, the Harvest Wine and Music Festival, and the Latin Explosion Music Festival and Car Show.
